English Electric Canberra

The Canberra was designed long before the area rule was devised.  Here it is being used as an example of how things used to be done - though area rule would have been of little use to the  Canberra in its speed range.  The Lightning did not have a wasp waist/coke bottle shape either.

Indeed, but this was not on the original design, and the drawing shows a wasp waist.  The Lightning benefited from the high sweep angle giving a shallow rise in cross-sectional area.  The ventral tank is placed in perhaps the only place possible to avoid a steeper rise.

Here is the point:

The area rule was invented 1944 by Aerodynamiker Otto Frenzl at Junkers company!

For all who can not read the linked German document.

All this two inventions swept wing and area rule are of German origin and later on reinvented by the Americans.

Happy modelling
