VPAF MiG's, Part 4: MiG-19S 'Farmer-C' (KP 1:72)

Shengyang J-6 (MiG-19S 'Farmer-C'), '6066', 925st FR, Noi Bai, 1974

Shengyang J-6 was the Chinese license built version of the MiG-19S 'Farmer-C'. Even if MiG-19 was the first supersonic fighter to go into mass production - it is overshadowed by it's predecessor and replacement. One reason is because it had quite short life span, just filling the gap between MiG-17 to MiG-21. Even if it had better performance than it's US counterparts - for example MiG-19 had superior rate of climb when compared to F-100 Super Sabre - the type was plagued with all kinds of technical problems, engine issues and design 'features' that made it somewhat dangerous to fly in inexperienced hands. Many of those flaws being caused by the hurry to get the plane type into production. '6066' is one of the 24 Shenyang J-6's that the Chinese provided as combat attrition replacement in 1974.

The kit, newly tooled KP Shenyang F-6C 'Farmer-C' "late".

Back of the box, not that we're using these with this build. Which is kinda shame, looking for a GB that gives me an excuse to build Pakistani jets (*hint* *hint*).

What's in the box - plus some aftermarket stuff.

50225694692_fc10b1bcc5_o.jpg

Like I said, this is a newly tooled kit. And while not quite up to par with the big names - it's a good looking kit and MiG-19 is something that has been neglected for quite a long time. Great thing is that KP is releasing even more MiG-19 goodness soon.

50224824093_84aa5a67dc_o.jpg

Aftermarket stuff - Pavla seat, Master gun barrels and Print Scale Decals.

50225694602_320167a3e6_o.jpg

This is what Print Scale offers as a scheme - and it's definitely not a bad one. But...

50225752617_340c1a5973_o.jpg

... when I saw this, I had to choose it. It's even got the same number - so it's simply meant to be! But as can be seen, Print Scale VPAF insignia are way off, looking at the pics, the bars are slightly chunkier than 'normally' (US etc.)  - but what Print Scale offers is very thin and wide bars. I'm thinking of cutting them down and see if they look any better.

The scheme on the plane is quite non-typical - as it is Chinese scheme that was left on the plane as it was taken into service. BTW is anyone familiar with Chinese J-6's? I'm guessing getting any color codes for these is a long shot - but for example the underside, is it gray or metal? Also any pics where the scheme can be seen (on the wings etc.) would be highly appreciated - my Google skills are failing me...

My other MiG's:

VPAF MiG's, Part 1: MiG-17 'Fresco-A' (Zvezda 1:72)

VPAF MiG's, Part 2: MiG-17PF 'Fresco-D' (AZ Model 1:72)

VPAF MiG's, Part 3: MiG-21PFL 'Fishbed-D' (Eduard 1:72)

VPAF MiG's, Part 5: MiG-21F-13 'Fishbed-C' (Modelsvit 1:72)

Hi Reini,

Oddly enough about 20 years ago I built an older version of the KP kit and ended up painting it in NMF unders and 2 tone green uppers somewhat like your illustration though perhaps not as light a shade - no idea where I got the idea from. I used some Microscale decs from a sheet for the Mig 17/19.

Cheers

Very interested to see how this one goes together Reini, big fan of the Mig-19/F-6.

Oh that is soooo last year!

I ran that one last year and had a great time, certainly up for perhaps a 1970's version soon.

Gosh haven't I seen you here already......well welcome again....

Gee you have chosen some less common model manufactures but gee the moulding work on them so far looks to be very nice.

It's a shame those decals are a bit off size wise, but they should be reasonably easy to correct.

Well good luck with this build as well.

Let's get this MiG rolling! Cockpit parts separated.

There was actually some locating pins, which helped finding the right spot for the side panels. Pretty clever part actually as in addition of being the cockpit side panel it also works as a nose wheel well and intake.

There isn't too much details in the cockpit - but atleast some decals are included. And I think I will go that route as there is only option for a closed canopy anyways.

Cockpit parts are ready for paint.

Blue-gray has been painted - we are ready to continue with the details.

Not sure how you do it! I can usually only ever have one build at a time on the board.

Well to be honest I'm keeping quite busy at the moment and getting bit woozy from all the builds :drunk:

Interior weathered a bit and added some nose weight. I like to use fishing weights.

Wings and fuselage being glued.

Wings went together quite nicely. The fences were bit fiddly but I got them on pretty nicely after a while.

Oh man! I totally missed the bus about a new tool MiG-19 from KP. I opened this thread expecting the riveted monstrosity I built during my teens. ThiS certainly doesn't look like an easy kit, but I'm very excited to follow along and see where this goes.

Still got lots of putty I need to sand from the fuselage but I couldn't resist putting the wings and control surfaces on.

There was a rather vague connection between the elevator and fuselage - but it did fit surprisingly well.

Wings required lots of back and forth in order to get somekind of symmetry and decent looking fit.

MiG-17 is almost ready to take off - and MiG-19 is not too far behind. I just love these early MiG's, such cool planes :)

gee you have been really busy!

I didn't realize the size difference between the 2 aircraft, it's the first time I've seen them together.

Hi Reini,

Here is the original KP kit I built must be at least 20 years ago.

DSC03602-crop

As I already had one in Soviet markings I used a sheet of Microscale decs for a Vietnamese one - no idea where I got the paint scheme from though - possible a Mig 17 illustration.  It has faded a bit and used to look a little lighter.

Those old Mig 17 and 19 kits from KP were a bit of a pain to build with all the seperate intakes and aerials butt fitted but they were about all that were available at the time - yours looks a lot better.

@PeterB Well it's still a good looking MiG-19! :)

50354360723_88bf20e0e5_o.jpg

New one needs some love too - maybe this is not a fair picture, but there are little bits here and there that need some attention (and putty). It's not bad, it just could be little bit better here and there.

50355219522_2ede7b7839_o.jpg

Like the underside, it needed some attention.

50355219677_1da1b8310a_o.jpg

Nose on the other hand was a good fit, just a quick swipe with a sanding stick, no putty needed.

50354360648_b69bc3bc91_o.jpg

Instructions on the other hand... I started putting down all the small intakes and stuff...

50355240047_0f0b8decdd_o.jpg

But then I started looking the instructions more closely and it took me quite a bit of time and detective work to figure out that the 'instructions' were not helping me too much... it was littered with mistakes.

50355085011_83c8fd2f23_o.jpg

Then I started looking at the parts list and it didn't make much sense either....

50355084981_b4c06ba8eb_o.jpg

Finally I made the conclusion that 46=49. Go figure.

50354360753_18a870e25a_o.jpg

I finally got all of the intakes on. Correctly, I hope :P I also drilled them all open so they would look little better.
