VPAF MiG's, Part 2: MiG-17PF 'Fresco-D' (AZ Model 1:72)

MiG-17PF 'Fresco-D', '4721', pilot Lam Van Lich, 921st 'Sao Do' FR, 3. February 1966

'First Nightfighter Kill'

MiG-17PF, the uglier (?) radar equipped brother of the legendary MiG-17F.  Even with the limited qualities of the radar, it gave VPAF some night fighter capability. Directed to the target area by ground controller and turning the radar on at the last possible moment to surprise the enemy. This tactic was pioneered by Lam Van Lich who took of alone in the evening of february 3rd 1966 to intercept Skyraiders. At the target area he detected and fired upon two Skyraiders - and got credited the first VPAF night kills (US sources do not confirm these kills).

Kit: AZ model MiG-17PF Pt. 2  (#AZ7340)

Scale: 1/72

Aftermarket: Master pitot tubes & guns, Eduard brassin wheels, Pavla seat

Paints: Tamiya AS-12 spray can, Vallejo Model Color, Model Air & Metal Color

Weathering: Flory Models Wash, Tamiya & MiG weathering products

Bit of a challenging kit here and there and I'm not that happy with the overall tidyness (or lack of it) of my build.

Built for Vietnam GB

O-2A, Airfix...build thread is here...this is an old kit and it built like an old kit. I made some mistakes.  It looks very nice form 75cm away.

 I still enjoyed it.

1/48 monogram Huey Hog, an old kit and an aircraft maybe not the best choice for my first GB. I had plenty of issues to challenge me but it's now ready for  it's first combat mission.

An excellent idea for a GB, encouraged me to read up on some long forgotten history.

Saigon, 1951

The French pilots of the Normandie-Niemen battalion fighting hard in Indochina finally receive replacements for their worn out Kingcobras in the shape of fresh F6F5 Hellcats.

Dorawings P63 and Eduard (né Platz) Hellcat with Arrowhead whitemetal Jeep and accessories. The base is scratchbuilt.

South Vietnamese (VNAF), H-34 Choctaw

This is the 1/100 scale Faller kit, with a few modifications to make it a little less inaccurate.  The build thread is here if you'd like to see more.

It's finished as the restored example which is currently on display at the Evergreen Aviation & Space Museum in Oregon.

This is my build of the Airfix M113 ACAV - a rebox of a kit made by JB Models in the 1990's. It is a simple kit and goes together well though the shields for the commanders "turret" were a bit of a pain as the instructions are not too helpful.

Other than adding aerials and some stowage, including a roll of wire fencing, a tarp, camo net and a couple of other things it is OOB.

I had intended to build the Ace kit of the T-59 tank in 1/72, but it was a real pain, so instead I have build the much better PST kit of the T-54A, as used by the North Vietnamese Army. It build up well, though I have never been a great fan of the "length and link" type track provided. I managed in the end and here it is, OOB except for the stowage on the back of the turret.

That brings my contribution to this GB to a close - I have thoroughly enjoyed it so thanks to all involved.

Cheers

This is AFV Club's M49 Fuel Truck. Really nice kit, builds without major issues except a whole lot of pin marks to be filled. Personally I think more decals could be supplied by AFV, it's really not that much. I bought some aftermarket sets for the "Flammable" and "No smoking" texts and for the smaller markings on the back. The 5-pointed stars and truck ID are "borrowed" from the M35 Gun Truck. I managed to destroy 1 set of numbers so I resorted to the Archer generic letters and numbers dry transfer sets for those. The font does not match but oh well...

It was quite difficult to get some good pictures, today's light conditions are not the best, neither is my camera and neither am I! The mud specks are much lighter than in real life because of that.

Paint is Tamyia Olive Drab XF-62 and some Vallejo. Weathered with MIG Oils and Vallejo washes and pigments.

Spitfire FR XIV RN218 of 273 Squadron - RAF Saigon Dec 45-46 -Airfix 1/48

273 Squadron operated Spitfire XIVs for a short time in Indo-China after the Japanese surrender from RAF Saigon (Nov 45 - Jan 46).  They flew from RAF Saigon as part of Op Masterdom  supporting the re-establishment of French colonial rule.  273 Squadron carried out perhaps the first airstrike in Vietnam when on 11 December, 3 Spitfire XIV aircraft supported French ground troops and attacked 'Annamite' insurgent forces at Ban Me Thuot.  Other recce missions were flown over Indo-China until the Squadron disbanded at the end of Jan 46.

The model is the newish 1/48 Airfix Kit with some old SEAC markings for the aircraft by Eagle Strike Decals.   I built it to trial the kit as it has some fit issues and to use the markings which I had for a few years so this GB was ideal.  Thanks for the Mods for doing this GB.

I also thought it might be a change from APCs, tanks, helos and fast jets.

It is most likely that this aircraft would have been repainted in Temperate Land Scheme in theatre, although some profiles have it in standard grey/ green DFS.

May I present F-4J Bu. #155755 of VF-92 "Silver Kings" as she was aboard USS Constellation from January to October 1973.

Built from a Hasegawa kit with Eduard cockpit etch and resin wheels.  Livery decals from Microscale and stencils from an Academy "Jolly Rogers" kit.  The main paints are Halfords white primer for the underside & control surfaces and Mr Paint for the upper surface grey, Tamiya yellow for the fin and various makes of metallic paint.

And having arrived at the Gallery page, I've just noticed that there has been a two week extension since I last looked!  This one had to be finished with a one piece cockpit as that was all that was left in the spares box (the original will be used for my F-4J(UK) - if I can find a photo of the cockpit then at least there is time to add it to this page.

  • 2 weeks later...

This is AFV Club's M35A1 Gun Truck "Nancy". Really nice kit, just like the M49 Fueler. The gun trucks were introduced after convoys with regular trucks go shot up and (much) more firepower was needed. At first the M35 2,5 ton trucks were converted, later on the bigger 5 ton trucks were used. Crews converted the trucks themselves, scrounging (uhm, tactically acquiring) armour plating and all kinds of weaponry while "higher higher" kept a blind eye. The fact was that nothing else was available and convoys didn't stand much of a chance without these DIY weapons platforms. Crews usually named their trucks too, and so here we have "Nancy". She's sporting an M45 quad .50 in the load bed. Correct me if I'm wrong about the designation, I believe they were called M55's in the towed configuration. Anyway, quite a bit of firepower there 🙂

Being an M35 truck, Nancy must have been one of the earlier ones. In real life she was painted regular OD, but a lot of gun trucks were painted black and I quite liked the look of that so I gave Nance a make-over. I think she looks pretty cool like this. I lost some of her decals to the fueler but there were enough left to add some interest. The story is that she is freshly painted and has just returned from her first convoy. Hence, only a little dust on her, otherwise still in good condition.

The kit really deserves some more effort, like maybe some more armour plating for driver and "shotgun", more load in the back and a proper mount for the quad .50. Also, the gun mounts and ammo boxes really need some more work. But it was a fun build and perfect for a GB.

Paints are Mr. Surfacer Black, then Tamiya's XF-62 Olive Drab, finished with brush painted Vallejo Model Colour Black. The weathering is just some airbrushed Vallejo European and Desert Dust washes.
