This is my build of the 1/72 Italeri Martin B-57G - a fairly rare and obscure old bird. It was a standard B-57B modified by the addition of a Low Light TV camera (LLLT), Forward Looking Radar, Infra Red scanner, and an early form of laser designator in the new bulbous nose, allowing it to use the first generation of Laser Guided bombs - the Mk 82 500lb Paveway. 16 were converted and about 11 of them entered service in great secrecy in September 1970 with the 13 BS "Grim Reapers" based at Ubon Royal Thai Air Base. They served with some distinction for 20 months before being withdrawn, specialising in night attacks on trucks and tanks moving along the various trails.

And as I have been asked for an underside view, although the contrast is pretty poor with the black colouring-

I have built it OOB except for adding a few more aerials and a pair of warning beacons on the top and bottom of the rear fuselage.

I had a great deal of help from other modellers working out the colours and location of some of the parts as Italeri were a bit vague at times, so thank you to them all.

I enjoyed that, and now it is time to build a pair of "Wild Weasels".

Sorry...posted that link above, not below...anyway...here is my first build for this GB.  Not my last.  This was a fun build until it came to the Berna decals.  Ghastly.  The rudder decals still stink.  Someday I might just hand paint the tri-colours...So don't look at that part of the aircraft please!  Thanks to Hewy for saving my bacon with the roundels!

VPAF MiG's, Part 1: MiG-17 'Fresco-A' (Zvezda 1:72)

Shenyang J-5 (MiG-17 'Fresco-A'), '2310', pilot Pham Ngoc Lan, 921st 'Sao Do' FR, Noi Bai, 3. April 1965

'First Kill'

This early Shenyang J-5 (license built MiG-17 'Fresco-A' by the chinese), number 2310, was flown by Pham Ngoc Lan on the 3rd of April 1965 when the first recorded VPAF kill was achieved. This happened over Thanh Hoa province and Pham Ngoc Lan claimed to shot down a F-8E of VF-211 flown by Lt Cdr Spence. But in fact, Crusader was only badly damaged in this incident and Spence made an emergency landing at Da Nang.

Kit: Zvezda Soviet Fighter MiG-17 "Fresco" (#7318)

Scale: 1/72

Aftermarket: Master pitot tubes & guns, Eduard brassin main wheels, Eduard PE

Paints: Vallejo Model Color, Model Air & Metal Color, Tamiya Lacquer

Weathering: Flory Models Wash, Mig streaking effects

Decent all-around good kit from Zvezda (originally from Dragon). I did enjoy the build, no big issues.

A few years ago I bought the Trumpeter F-105G Wild Weasel kit. When reading up on it I found that a small number of F-100F two seaters had been modified  as an interim measure before the F-105 version entered service and decided to model one of them too. Looking around I found this Trumpeter kit which claimed to include a Weasel version and was on offer cheap so I bought it. On opening the box I found Trumpeter had been somewhat economical with the truth as the saying goes - along with two NMF trainers they included the markings for one of the first 5 converted to Weasels, but had not included any parts for the conversion. I have therefore added a fairing for the  AN/APR-25/26 under the nose which is probably hidden by the probe, together with 3 small antennae further back and modified the kit RHAW fairing on the tail so now it looks like it should AFAIK.

DSC03694-crop DSC03696-crop DSC03697-crop

It went together pretty well apart from some vagueness in the instructions, but by all accounts has accuracy issues, being supposedly too long at the front. Whatever, this is meant to represent F-100F-21-NA serial 581226 of the Weasel detatchment of 6234 TFW, one of the first 5 conversions to Wild Weasel configuration, which carried out the first successful mission against SA-2 Guideline sites. Based as the Royal Thai base at Korat from late November 1965, this is how I imagine it looking on that mission in December of that year with the paint already beginning to burn off the rear fuselage, as was normal with the Super Sabre. As was also normal, I have shown the leading edge slats drooping a little as hydraulic pressure bled off after landing.

Cheers

Another A-37B, this time in the Gentleman's True Scale...1/72nd...Many thanks to Triet Cam for his.  It helped me with some added touches.  Vallejo Air, OOB all the way, even the resin additions.  They came with the double boxing from Squadron/Encore.  Noy's Miniature's for the backdrop.

Following on from my build of Trumpeter's F-100F as a Wild Weasel, here is their version of the F-105G. I have modelled it as 52-4440 from the 17thWWS, 388TFW based at Korat in Thailand between 1972 and 1973 and I have gone for what is supposedly the normal armament of 2 Shrikes and one Standard ARM.

DSC03819-crop DSC03822-crop DSC03824-crop DSC03825-crop

The Thud was slightly unusual in that the speed brake was mounted behind the engine exhaust in the form of 4 "petals" and after landing and as the hydraulic pressure bled off, they "relaxed" with the top and side ones moving slightly apart and the bottom one gradually drooping down as I have modelled it.

It is a pretty good kit apart from some vagueness in the instructions, and little or no info on decal placement, particularly for the pylons and missiles, so if you are building the 1/72 version like this, I suggest downloading a copy of the instructions for their 1/32 version which are far more detailed.

Cheers

Here is my build of the Hasegawa 1/72 EKA-3B tanker/EW plane, in the markings of Det 1 of VAQ 130 "Zappers" serving on board USS Constellation during her 1971/72 cruise off Vietnam. This particular machine was retired after being replaced by the EA-6B Prowler and converted back to a tanker, and as such remained in service into the 1980's.

DSC03895-crop DSC03897-crop DSC03899-crop DSC03901-crop

As you can see, the Light Gull Gray is sensitive to lighting conditions, varying between a slightly brownish/Mushroom shade to a cooler almost bluish colour.

The kit has been released several times over the years as an early and late A-3B bomber, a KA-3B tanker, a straight EW version the EA-3B, and this combined EW and Tanker version, and it goes together well with not that many parts. It is well worth building if you can get one.

Cheers

So, when the USN decided to buy the A-3B bomber from Douglas, the USAF decided they wanted some too. Initially they were thinking about a combination of bombers and recce aircraft, and soon identified a need for an Electronic Recce plane which became the RB-66C, Later they realised the need for jamming capability and converted some 13 B-66B bombers to EB-66B, and upgraded the RB-66C to the EB-66C. The C version was the electronic "spy" used to identify enemy radars and radios with limited jamming capability but the handful of EB-66B conversions actually accompanied raids to provide a jamming screen, using the info from the C version to set up the jammers before take off. Later a larger batch of surplus B-66B, probably over 50, were converted to the more capable EB-66E and this is one of them.

DSC03902-crop DSC03905-crop DSC03907-crop DSC03909-crop

I had intended to convert the Italeri 1/72 B-66B in my stash to either an EB-66C or EB-66E, but the more I thought about it the harder it looked, so I chickened out and bought a cheap second hand Italeri EB-66E. It is in the markings of 42 TEWS, 388 TFW based at Kotat RTAFB between 1971 and the end of 1972. A colour photo in the Aerofax book on the B-66 confirms that it was one of the very few such planes given a shark mouth, and it may also have had a non standard coulour scheme with not only 2 greens but also 2 browns, but that could just be down to weathering and a partial repaint, so I have used the standard 3 colour SEA upper scheme.

By the time the USAF had finished messing about with the spec, the design ended up somewhat different to the A-3B and whether they saved the intended time and money by buying "off the shelf" must be open to debate. The various EB-66 versions did a lot of useful but dangerous work as reflected by their losses, as the North Vietnamese soon realised what they were up to and set up SAM traps and sent their Migs after them.

I have enjoyed this GB, and might even add another build if time permits, but now I need to concentrate on another GB, with a further one due to start in a few weeks.

Thanks to the organisers for great GB, and thanks for watching.

To those still building - good luck!

VPAF MiG's, Part 4: MiG-19S 'Farmer-C' (KP 1:72)

Shengyang J-6 (MiG-19S 'Farmer-C'), '6066', 925st FR, Noi Bai, 1974

Shengyang J-6 was the Chinese license built version of the MiG-19S 'Farmer-C'. Even if MiG-19 was the first supersonic fighter to go into mass production - it is overshadowed by it's predecessor and replacement. One reason is because it had quite short life span, just filling the gap between MiG-17 to MiG-21. Even if it had better performance than it's US counterparts - for example MiG-19 had superior rate of climb when compared to F-100 Super Sabre - the type was plagued with all kinds of technical problems, engine issues and design 'features' that made it somewhat dangerous to fly in inexperienced hands. Many of those flaws being caused by the hurry to get the plane type into production. '6066' is one of the 24 Shenyang J-6's that the Chinese provided as combat attrition replacement in 1974.

Kit: KP Shenyang F-6C 'Farmer-C' "late" (#KPM0160)

Scale: 1/72

Aftermarket: Master pitot tubes & guns, Pavla resin seat and Print Scale decals

Paints: Vallejo acrylics

Weathering: Flory Models Wash, Mig & Tamiya weathering products

Newly tooled MiG-19 from KP is good all-around kit and probably the best kit choice for this subject in this scale.

This was a very fun build.  I don't build a lot of American aircraft so the Skyhawk was fun.  And the double build was fun too.  The WiP is here...
