Orange dot on Luftwaffe Eurofighters

Latinbear

Recommended Posts

I've noticed that Luftwaffe Eurofighters have an orange dot on the port side of the air intake just under the wing leading edge. It's port side only.

No other countries seem to do this and I was wondering if anybody knows the significance of the dot?

Many thanks in advance

AFAIK these were RAL3000 Feuerrot on the F-104:

The ones on the Typhoon look like RAL3022 Lachsrot ("salmon red").

Cheers,

Unless you have a paint spec I would beg to differ on that color selection. To my eye (and accounting for some distortion in the Primeportal photo), the panel on the Luftwaffe Typhoons is most likely International Orange (FS12197) or a close RAL equivalent, possibly RAL2005 "Luminous Orange."  RAL3022 is much too "pink" to match the actual color.

The "dot" is actually a circular cover panel for the refueling port.  Not sure when or why the Germans went to the orange finish, but the panel is present on all Typhoons regardless of nationality.

Primeportal Close-up shot of panel

Superb! Thanks very much indeed.

I'm a member of the "Bavarian Tigers" association of Fighter Wing 74 and did the "Ghost Tiger"-livery on GAF Typhon 31+00, thus have been around and up close to the original at Neuburg airbase frequently. The panel is definitely by no means any kind of orange but a proper and bright RED.

Given your credentials, do you have an actual RAL match?

My statement above was in reference to the color as it appears in photographs, more particularly the fact that the color is very definitely not RAL 3022, which most observers would describe as "pink" rather than "red."

Unfortunately it has been many years since I had the opportunity to see a Typhoon "in the flesh," but given the OP's question and decal producers' representations, there is clearly some subjectivity as to "red" vs "orange."  I have difficulty accepting the assertion that the actual color is a "pure" red, vs a red with an orange tint - similar to the color of Ferrari automobiles.

Another good example is the training scheme worn by U.S. types such as the TA-4 and T-45, often described as "red and white" but the "red" in question is technically orange (the aforementioned FS 12197).  What a given person calls it is immaterial if we can verify the actual paint spec.  This shouldn't be a source of the same level of debate as Japanese Zeros or the topside camouflage on "Lou IV."

I can't access my close ups right now but it is definitely a red. I do not have a RAL but I would describe it as a slightly toned down flatt red. In my previous post I boasted it as a "proper and bright" red but better take that "bright" not too literal. What might come close in tone would be the red of a fire fighter truck just not gloss but flatt. Another suggestion. You might want to look at the many field refuel panels on external fuel tanks. That would be the same color. BTW, the Typhoon has three of these field refuel latches also on the port side top fuselage. The panel on the port intake side has the same red color, however, while the field refuel panels are gloss red, the panel on the port intake side is usually flatt. Please don't ask me why the difference between gloss and lfatt panels; I have no flamin' idea.

I'd consider the red stenciling to be Feuerrot RAL 3000 and that cap a bit brighter (my 2 cents: It' (close to) RAL 2002 Blutorange (officially "vermillion", literally "blood(y) orange")).

I tried to figure the color by comparing it to the red in the Kokarde of the Austrian Eurofighters,

https://www.bundesheer.at/download_archiv/photos/flieger/galerie.php?id=1148&currRubrik=55

https://www.bundesheer.at/download_archiv/photos/flieger/galerie.php?id=1141&currRubrik=55

came to the conclusion "it is brighter than the Kokarde" - just to find out that I can't find any official definition of that Kokarde's color.

HOW CAN YOU RUN A COUNTRY LIKE THAT?

That is pure anarchy.

If I am not too wrong, the red color would be "Pantone 186 C"....

Thanks! I stand corrected and feel much better now that I know Austria does have proper regulations regarding the subject.

Wikipedia even directs straight to the horse's mouth https://www.bundesheer.at/abzeichen/pdf/flaggenordnung.pdf

which says "Das Rot in den österreichischen Staatsfarben hat die Charakteristik „Pantone 186 C“ aufzuweisen" and the rest of the Flaggenordnung is just ... pure poetry to me.

PS: In the near future Austria will have to publish an update to Beilage 3 zu Erlass GZ S93592/3-MFW/2018 in VBl. I Nr. 63/2018 (different flag for alphabetically last flag in "AUT+EU-Mitglieder alph.+EU") but I fear I'm getting carried away, sorry about that!
