Geoff King
Good day! I recently scanned these letters to my father, Richard King, from the Royal Navy regarding his interest to recreate the landing and takeoff of his Sopwith Pup replica using one His Majesty’s carriers. It was late 1966 and he had just finished building his Pup in our garage in Rhinebeck, New York, and his wish was to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Squadron Commander Dunning’s achievement the next year. As it turned out the HMS Eagle was scheduled to be touring the American coast during that time and plans were put in motion for this to play out off the coast of Rhode Island. But alas, it was not meant to be as tensions in the Gulf of Aden caused the Eagle to be recalled and all the plans were for naught. To my knowledge no other attempts to recreate the operation were ever tried. He had also communicated directly with the Dunning family, and received their encouragement to proceed with the venture as they seemed very keen to recall the significance of the event in history as well. If anyone has a recommendation for another website or organization to share these with I would be appreciative if you would pass them along to me. I hope you enjoy! Cheers, Geoff
