1`:48 Hurricane MkI

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

Here's my attempt at Airfix' MkI Hurricane, modelled as V6799 of 501 (County of Gloucester) Sqn, RAF Kenley, October 1940, This aircraft was flown by P/O (later W/C) Ken McKenzie - on 7th October 1940 he was chasing a damaged Bf109 over the South Coast. Having expended his ammunition he used his wingtip to remove the port tailplane, causing the Bf109 to crash. In doing so the Hurricane's wingtip was also removed, causing McKenzie to force land near Folkestone. He rejoined his unit in quick order and went on to claim at least seven more victories before the end of the battle. Here's a couple of photos of the aircraft:

This was a quick build so no WIP. I used a Montex mask set for all the national insignia, and I am quite pleased with the outcome. I noted from the above photo that the aircraft appeared to have no underwing roundels, so completed the scheme accordingly. The aircraft was only on squadron strength for a very short time, so I kept overall weathering to a minimum. Photos were taken prior to rigging wiith Uschi fine line. Anyway, on to the photos:

And a final shot with Dickie Cork's Sea Hurricane:

I'm glad to finally have a BoB Hurricane in the collection, and will add to the Defiant I built earlier in the year. I suppose I'd better complete a Spitfire to complete the tryptich...

Thanks for looking,

Roger

That's a lovely model Roger, great work and great background too.

All the best

Thanks for the kind words Chris - the background certainly attests to their commitment to the cause. Incredible bravery...

Cheers,

Excellent! These Montex masks seems to be very useful. One can see the difference on the wings a little bit at the last photograph on both models

very nice

Andy

Thanks Andy - they take more time but there is a visible improvement,

Cheers,

Really really nice Hurricane. Are you tempted to do it again with the broken wingtip?😄

Thanks for the kind words Jeff - sadly there's no photos and I would not wish to speculate

Cheers,

Roger

this is a model, which was on here, note the bent prop blade,  Rotol blades are a compressed wood composite and snap off and shatter

your work surface does not do it justice though....

Thanks for the kind words Troy - maybe I do need to raise my game in terms of presentation!
