1:1 scale display case for my V Bombers

Recommended Posts

Right so odd thread, not exactly a normal model WIP but instead one for displaying them. I’m going to be building a 1:1 scale IKEA Pax Wardrobe with display case conversion set (aka glass doors and shelves). Definitely need this as I ran out of room for my 1:72 v bombers and this should hold 14-21 depending if I can get 3 to a shelf.

My old display area where I managed to fit 3 of them.... out of 6 I currently have in the scale (7 including the Vulcan cockpit section)

Adding the parts for each end of the top and bottom sides

Parts that the top and bottom attach to

The ends were added between three of us trying to support them and align everything

The structure of the bottom end seems a little stronger

The backboard is nailed on. I only did one nail as my hammering abilities are somewhat lacking - I helped!

I think this might be big enough...... Just about. That’s a 1:144 scale Vulcan K2 I’m working on on this thread:

The wardrobe/display case is upright now, again took 3 of us due to some complex manoeuvring that was required to get it into position. Next up is to bolt it to the wall.

V Bombers test fitted, I can get two side by side. Glass shelves and doors will be fitted after I get back from work.

What a great idea!  This thing must weigh a ton (tonne) though!  All that compressed wood pulp.  Egad.

Can confirm: weighs a lot

Can you imagine struggling with two of these units on your own, including fitting sliding doors? :P

I managed to do it with some clever application of old bath towels (ok, the wooden floor helped).

I could surely use something like this in my new house.  Where can one find the “display case conversion set“ you mentioned?

it's literally just the glass shelves and doors made for it. There's other combinations of doors that also fit

Probably not an issue but I came to grief recently with an ikea unit, granted a billy bookcase which overbalanced when both glass doors were opened.

resulting in this

Fixed thusly

And all except my Gamecock and mig  21 Are now repaired, I’ve never superglued so many bits back on in one day before.

If not at the BlueYellow store itself.

Most of these pin holes are a standard size across multiple ranges (because it's easier to bulk-manufacture fittings if they're standardised to a large extent).

Seriously, does anybody know a simple way to hide the unused holes?

6mm dowel flush cut with a flexible dowel saw, fine filler, sand and then paint the whole surface. Very very neat but makes moving shelves afterwards a no-no
