DaveJL
A bit more done today. Both Spits are now at the same stage and pretty much ready for primer. Just a few areas to tidy up before adding and masking the clear parts. As mentioned previously, I had a bit of an issue with the wing to fuselage join, but some light sanding has cured it. A spot of Mr Surfacer here and there as well. Generally though, lovely kit! To the 109. This kit has pretty much fallen together. An absolute joy to build. The fuselage was closed up and set aside, allowing me to build up the wings. Within a matter of hours, this is what appeared: Almost perfect fit in all areas. Just need to clean up the fuselage seam line. Once the cowling goes on, that's pretty much it bar a few little bits and pieces. The exhausts are individuals pieces which is an interesting approach. I've really enjoyed this kit, so much so I've ordered a different variant for a later GB. Easily done I keep telling myself, not a sign of weakness... Anyway, here's a shot of the 109 beside one of the Spits: Turns out I was right, the 109 is smaller than the Spitfire. I shall reward myself with another kit, infact as I type this I've bought another on eBay... Final shot for today: More soon. Dave
Greg Law
Have you built the Eduard Bf 109E before? If not be careful with the tail plane's braces. I find them rather fragile and I always break them.

DaveJL
A little more done. Both Spits have had their clear parts added and masked. The cockpit also masked off. Both now ready to have the canopy frames sprayed and then a coat of primer: The 109 has had it's cowling added. I needed to sand a little bit of the side panels to get them to sit neatly. Other than that, no issues with the fit: More soon. Dave
DaveJL
More done over the last couple of days. The Spits were primed and given a rough pre-shade: Ready for paint which I hope to get started over the next few days. The sub assemblies are at various stages of completion: Landing gear and exhausts are the only bits that are finished: I sprayed the exhausts Tamiya Dark Iron before dry brushing them with a mixture of brown and orange. Just need to add a bit of soot during the final weathering stage. The 109 is coming along too and is just about ready for priming. Exhausts are in, clear parts on and masked and a few odds and sods have been fitted. You can probably see in the pictures that I manage to bend the tail wheel More soon Dave.
Stew Dapple
Good progress Dave (apart from the tailwheel of course, but at least it hasn't broken off and vanished completely) Cheers, Stew

DaveJL
A bit more to show. Both Spits have had their undersides sprayed Mr Paint Sky. The landing gear bays have also been sprayed aluminium. I wanted P/O Lock's aircraft to look a little more weathered so sprayed a bit lighter over some of the pre-shading to allow this to show through. P/O Lock's mount is the one on the right in the last picture. Onto the 109, the canopy framing was sprayed RML-02 and once dry, it was primed and finally given a pre-shade: I'm off work again tomorrow so my plan is, hopefully, to get both camouflage colours onto the Spits. More soon. Dave

DaveJL
13 hours ago, Stew Dapple said: Nice progress Dave, looking very good Enjoy your day off Cheers, Stew Thanks Stew! It was fairly productive.... ....several hours at the bench with a mammoth spraying session. First thing this morning I masked up the undersides of the Spits, then sprayed a few light coats of MRP Dark Earth. I let it set while I took the dog for walk. Don't know if it's a coincidence but as a German Shepherd, he took a bit of an interest in the 109 box which was sitting out ready for the recycling bin. Either that or it was because his lead was nearby. Who knows! Both Spits, ready for their respective masks: Once on, several light coats of Dark Green went on and after a couple of hours, I peeled off the masking, added the aerial behind the cockpit and popped in the exhausts. Some chipping was added to the walkways on the wings using maskol and a bit of sponge. You'll note from the pictures that F/Lt Malan's aircraft (left in the last picture) has the old style aerial fitted. One snap in natural light: The props for the Spits and 109 were painted, and sealed with a flat coat: The 109 was then given a few light coats of RLM-65. Hope I've gone far enough up on the sides with the blue. Easy job to correct if not. I'm hoping to get a gloss coat on the Spitfires over the next couple of days then I'm due to travel to Berlin all being well at the weekend so will away from the bench for a few days. More soon. Anything I need to look out for or be aware of ? Dennis They're very good Dennis. Dry within minutes and give a lovely even finish. I try to paint the exterior of most of my models using them now. I spray in light coats at around 15psi. Several passes and you'll have a lovely finish. They do have quite a strong smell though!
DaveJL
Decals on after several hours. No real issues other than a lot of Micro Sol needed on the roundels on the undersides of the wings to get them to sit around the various lumps and bumps found there. Despite this, there are a few small creases that just won't leave no matter how hard I work at them. Some cunning staining from the outermost .303 should hide this though 😉 Next job will be to seal them all in with a top coat of gloss. More soon. DaveJL
Managed to get the Spits finished over the last 2 days. Panel wash on, then some weathering using Abteilung oils, AK pencils and Tamiya powders. Once done and after a flat coat, just had to pop on the sub assemblies. More pictures in RFI: Will crack on with the 109 next week. Dave
