DaveJL
Hello all, Here is my entry for this GB - Eduard's new Spitfire MK.1 'The Few' dual combo. Having built Tamiya's new tool Mk.1 last year, thoroughly enjoying it, I'm looking forward to Eduard's offering and if it's anything like their Mk.IX, I'll be happy enough! Kit (lovely box art): I'll be going for the below two schemes, both from RAF Hornchurch. Firstly, K9953 of 74 Squadron, flown by F/Lt Adolph Malan in June/July 1940: Malan would go on to have 16 confirmed 'kills' during the battle. Secondly, N3162 of 41 Squadron, flown by P/O Stanley Lock in August/September 1940: Lock would go on to have 21 confirmed 'kills' during the battle. I've ordered some overtrees from Eduard as I'm aware I need the same fuselage halves for both aircraft (Eduard only provide one fuselage with the armour around the forward fuel tank) along with 2 sets of Brassin exhausts. Looking forward to getting started. Dave EDIT - SEE POST DATED 19/08.
DaveJL
A brief start made on this today. As I'm waiting for the overtrees to arrive from Eduard, I worked on the bits common to both before assembling the cockpits etc. Firstly the wings: Landing gear wells and radiator fitted perfectly. F/Lt Malan's K9953 has a slightly different cockpit set up to that of N3162, most notable is the lack of armour plate behind the headrest. The side walls and other parts also made up: Etched armour plate added to P/O Lock's N3162: Fuselage halves that I need for both builds. Note the lovely rivet details and raised fuel tank armour: I'm going to have a heck of a lot of spares once the overtrees arrive. This little pile is just from today! More soon. Ozzy
Nice start Dave, looks like there here is enough for a 3rd build in that pile.

DaveJL
More done over the last couple of days. The cockpits were painted, detailed and given a light wash before a flat coat. The only difference between the two is the amoured panel above the seat on N3162. Close up of the lovely etch instrument panel: Fuselage halves were also painted and detailed: The finished cockpits: Installed into the fuselage. This one will be F/Lt Malan's K9953, note the lack of triangular armoured panel above the seat: A query about the cockpit - is the headrest, part R55, fitted to the armoured panel, part PE21 or R24? Eduard do not clarify if it is: I had also ordered a set of AML camouflage masks, the 'A' scheme for P/O Lock's aircraft and the 'B' scheme for F/Lt Malan's mount: Finally, picked up this as part of a Key Publishing subscriber offer. A very good read with plenty of pictures: Just waiting on the overtrees to arrive for Eduard, but in the interim I'll continue on with K9953. More soon, Dave
DaveJL
Not an update per se but a package arrived from Eduard this morning with the bits and pieces that I'd ordered. Fairly quick turnaround from Eduard, just shy of 2 weeks from order to delivery. The only bits I need - later fuselage: Compared with the earlier fuselage: Brassin exhausts and comparison with kit parts: If anyone needs any parts, please let me know as I now have an abundance of spare plastic: Finally, is anyone able to assist with my headrest query in yesterdays update? Cheers Dave
alt-92
Don't mention the sinkmarks... don't mention the sinkmarks... drat! Shame really, the plastic ones do have the welding seam line on the two front stacks (albeit a bit thicker) as on the real thing. Oh and Eduard intend to have R55 on R24. Not the PE version, but you're free to do so if it's more accurate of course.

alt-92
Depends, which one is this for? There may be pictures that could give more indication.

It’s for N3162, the instructions show the armoured plate fitted but no mention of the headrest to be fitted either to the etch part or plastic alternative. I haven’t been able to find any pictures online of the aircraft so far.
Stew Dapple
Hi mate, forgive me if I've misunderstood the question, but the headrest is still fitted with the armour plate Cheers, Stew

DaveJL
A package arrived today from a fellow member, inside was a distinctly Eduard looking box, with a picture of a Messerschmitt Bf-109. I was walking with the box to add it to the stash but took a sharp right and set It on the bench beside the two Spitfires. So now, I'm building Two Spits (from Hornchurch) and a One Oh Nine (not from Hornchurch).... W.Nr.5587 was flown by Oberfeldwebel Fritz Beeck of Jagdgeschwader 51 (JG51), operating out of Wissant in France. On the 24th August 1940, this machine was shot down and crash landed in the area of East Langdon. I do not know the fate of the pilot, if anyone can shed some light? The IWM link below shows the actual aircraft: https://www.iwm.org.uk/collections/item/object/205076119 I don't half enjoy giving myself plenty of work! Hi @DaveJL - a quick question on the overtrees boxing - are all of the sprues identical to those contained in the dual combo or is there inclusion of a hydraulic undercarriage control rather than the manual pump lever (part R 53) in the dual combo? Graham Boak
How modelling has changed -not so long ago few would have cared about such a choice of secondary control in the cockpit. (I suspect that few do nowadays.) Those that did would simply have made one. Such an approach is still open.

I've no idea what the hydraulic undercarriage control looks like but part part R53 is present and the sprues look the same as the dual combo.

Catching up on all the years that I hadn't built a Spitfire! My last one prior to the Tamiya MK.1 last year was a 1/72 effort about 12 years ago! Also just realised this is my first ever 109 too. Paulaero
Fantastic work, sorely tempted by one of these sets but have two Tamiya Mk 1s and must make a start on the Airfix one and the Hurricane for this GB !!!!

Thanks mate. I'm a big fan of the new tooled Tamiya Mk.1. At the moment I'm not sure which I prefer... Bit windy outside so managed a few hours at the bench. Started on the 109, namely assembling and prepping the cockpit before spraying with RLM-02, with a few details added including a light wash: The engine was built up, a lot of parts not required as I'm keeping it all closed up: With the arrival of the Spitfire overtrees, I was able to crack on with P/O Locks mount. Fuselage halves sprayed and given a light wash: Cockpit then installed and fuselage halves closed up. This is how the two look at the minute: More work was done on F/Lt Malan's Spit, namely adding the wings, stabiliser and rudder. I had a little bit of difficultly blending the wings to the fuselage, they didn't seem, or want to sight quite right so I had to do a little sanding work. Some Mr Surfacer used to clean up the seam lines also: Coming together nicely. I also compared the size of the Spit and the 109; they're about equal in length. I always had it in my head that the 109 was a little smaller, but I was wrong...again More soon. Dave
