Question about Jato bottles

Recommended Posts

Hello Dears,

I'm about to paint the Jato bottles for my F-84F but, I'm a bit confused...

What's the color of these devices ??

I'll bet for Olive drab but I'm not sure about that

Any idea anyone ?

Thanks beforehand

Some Belgian examples here:

Restored/tarted-up example on an F-84F in a Greek museum (about a third of the way down the page):

Some okay shots here:

and

And, there may be an answer in this thread:

They’re not really helpful for the original request, but they do have some interesting information and JATO shots...

I've researched that topic too. My impression is that light grey was the standard color for anything 'rocket'. But I've seen olive drab too, but they could be museum repaints. Two more comments regarding F-84F use:

1. five different types of JATO bottles were allowed, according to the flight manual, page 162 (that you can find online I think). They look rather different, so that can be confusing. The Monogram 1/48 kit contains Aerojet 14AS1000 bottles, but the diameter is too small, 4.5 instead of 5.4 mm. That creates the illusion that they are ~75% of the correct diameter.

2. the set of four bottles was mounted on a sheet metal rack, and on all models that I know, this is absent. Here's a good photo of one: http://data3.primeportal.net/hangar/luc_colin3/f-84f_fu-30/images/f-84f_fu-30_34_of_49.jpg

I'm working on a 3D printed model of the rack, with multiple bottle options, but it could take some time before it's done.

The bottles shown in the above photo are called 14DS1000, and I think 'M8 JATO' too, but I'm not 100% sure of the tie-up. As you can see they appear to be the reverse of the Monogram bottles, with the rounded ends and the flanged ends swapped.

I thank you Gents, I'm on to fabricate the metal rack, an modify the bottles...

Thanks again.

Sincerely.
