gibbo99
When waiting for some other parts to turn up for other stuff, I thought I'd start this one.. At first glance the sprues look ok This one is "back-to-back" for some reason Might as well start with the hull. Lots of filler needed here But it's turned out ok I think Next, onto the decking, 1st coat on, so looking patchy. They are all severely warped too I still haven't decided to go for the normal orange/red superstructure or the off-white (5/6 of class orange/red with Sibir being the only one that was off-white). Down side is the name is moulded into the hull, so would have to sand it out and then paint a new one on and my Cyrillic looks like a 2y/o has done it lol Edited July 31, 2020 by gibbo99
gibbo99
Main deck now in place. It was a bit of a tight squeeze lol Added a couple of more coats to the deck and it looks a lot better now Little bit of touch up needed, especially around the base of superstructure. Somehow managed to snap off one of the fwd stbd bollards - no idea how that happened, they are tiny. Edited August 1, 2020 by gibbo99
gibbo99
Lots of filling and sanding needed on this one (plus a LOT of swearing) It's still not completely flat, but if I try anymore it's going to snap Rest of decks are the same too. But at least it's actually starting to take its shape now I can already see that the fwd corners of the main superstructure are going to need filled and possibly both sides where it meets the deck. Then there is a hell of a lot of repainting needed.

Thanks Steve, I think I may have just been unlucky with it being warped to start with It's the 2012 version I have.. https://www.scalemates.com/kits/ark-models-40002-russian-nuclear-powered-icebreaker-arktika--137854 Clamps and bands are coming off in a bit, so I can see how much more filling/sanding I've got to do lol

beefy66
Have you considered using a CA glue as a filler at the joints I sometimes use a thick CA applied with a small pin in layers to build up the gaps I find it helps make the joints stronger HTH Looking good so far some kits are sent to try our patience so keep at it beefy

A few of the deck are held down with CA anyway as it was the only way to keep them down. Never thought of using it instead of putty - will give it a try. As I know the moulds were ordered to Heller in the late 70-ies (but never released under Heller's name). I recall when Brezhnev died and the ship was renamed in his memory I printed "Leonid Brezhnev" with typewriter and attached new name on already assembled model, so it certainly was available before 1982. To TS - good luck, you are making a good progress
gibbo99
Maneged to get a fair bit more done on this one, also restarting the 1/350 Resolution (in background). Wish I had some thicker line and I would have used it on the cranes instead of the default parts. Tape is there as I just found out the stand doesn't hold the model Something else to sort out lol Still need to paint the name and touch up the props, plus other stuff. Don't think I'll bother with any weathering lol
stevehnz
This is turning out rather well. It'll be a handsome job when done. Don't blame you on the weathering bit, titivating is obviously not popular for Russian sea persons. Steve.

It didn't work out quite right, but its better than just black hull and red superstructure.
