Paint Help with Revell Yak - 3

Aeroplane Man

Recommended Posts

Hello, after many years of not building a Model Aircraft kit I decided to buy one.

Its a Revell Yak - 3 1:72 Level 3 kit.  My  question is the box says 10 tins of paint  but the instructions say 12.

Which is correct and also where is the cheapest place to but it?

Thank You

Hi, Aeroplane Man.

If you don't have local model-shop (an increasingly-rare beasty today), I would recommend that you look on E-Bay and find a UK trader who provides a "fixed-price" delivery charge. This means that you pay exactly the same shipping cost, regardless of buying one pot of paint or ten. I seem to remember that there are two E-Bay traders who have this pricing policy on their delivery.

Hope this helps.

Chris.

Hi Aeroplane Man, I highly suggest you invest a little time to read about the different types of paint available (acrylic, enamel, lacquer, mix?), and then read about different brands available to you. As you're just starting out I'm going to assume you're brush painting (and not airbrushing), and suggest some popular and widely available ones - Vallejo Model Color, LifeColor, or Revell Aqua if acrylics, or Humbrol if enamel. I suggest the research because if you are thinking long term and may want to get into airbrushing, some paints don't lend themselves to airbrush as well so it would be good to get some that can perform double duty.

To the other part of your question as to how many paints you need, I suggest you go into the instructions and find out where all the paints are called out. You may find that a few of the paints are for really small parts that may not be worth buying an entire bottle of paint for.

Like spruecutter96 said see if you have a model shop around you first. If not, others can direct you to UK friendly online shops.

Just looked at the instructions on the Revell site here , and it's not a case of Revell using too many paint mixes (only C by the looks of it), so it is 12 separate colours needed.

If it helps, 3 of those colours are only used on the pilot by the looks of it (H, I & K), so it's down to you whether or not you want him in there in the first place. 2 more (J) are only for the navigation lights on the wing tips, so maybe skip this first time round if your budget is a bit stretched (but your going to do this on many plane kits you build and I would recommend getting a "clear/translucent" paint to do these, so maybe look for a clear red/green in the range instead and paint that over a silver base. Revell isn't available locally so I'm assuming their in that range somewhere)?

As for shops, can't help you there.

Hello, Aeroplane man.

As has been said earlier, if you have a local model shop then that's the place to go (where in the Uk are you ?). Also, like you I have returned to modelling after a long break, you'll be amazed at the amount and type of paints that are available.

If no local shop, then there are many online shops, trouble is paint gets more expensive because of postage. During lockdown I use these two, which have a good delivery time and reasonable prices.

This is my local shop, which also does online and has branches elsewhere.

Good Luck.
