Hi all and looking forward to joining with this one..

Decals will be from this lovely sheet produced by Southern Expo for the 70th Anniversary with all proceeds going to a local hospice which is wonderful.

For this build, i'm going with 'White 2' of 4./JG51 from August 1940. According to the notes on the sheet, this a/c flown by Ofw. Johann Illner collided with a Spitfire flown by Al Deere on 9 July 1940 but managed to return to France. Illner was later shot down over England in November that year and spent the rest of the war as a POW.

The notes also mention this model was fitted with an early E-1 canopy which I think I have a spare around somewhere.

Thanks for looking and enjoy your builds.

All the best,
Dermot

Nice choice Dermot, I still have the remnants of that decal set somewhere, I believe if you had a mind to, you could also make a model of the Spitfire Al Deere was flying when he 'met' Johann Illner.

Cheers,

So off we go! Just OOB as won't see much when it's buttoned up.

I like how Airfix gives you droppable flaps and some engine detail for what is an entry-level kit. It goes together really quickly without any visible gaps.

So a bit more on this one. The fit is really great but when looked at from head on, I felt the wings were a bit flat.

So sanded off a little on the wing roots and much happier with that.

Painted up the engine and then primed.

Have already painted the Light blue, then masked up for the first of the top camo colours..

Hi Dermot,

you are a rocket-propelled modeler! This kit is not a very difficult one, but you are sending it! And it looks real good!

I was just looking at a photo of that very 109, with the mouth and the cigarette, painted to celebrate the pilot's first kill.

Original scheme, for sure.

Keep having fun.

Thanks all!
Have added the mottling with some pieces of sponge (it's ok....I give it 5 / 10) and started on the decals - the stencils are from the kit while the unit markings are by the lovely people at #SouthernExpo

Decals were done followed by a gloss coat and a light wash with Flory Models dark dirt. After a little fettling, she's now sitting upright - hope I've got the 'sit' right...

Some more weathering and then a flat coat and final bits.

Thanks for looking!

Very convincing mottle a la JG 2! Great show.

This 109 really does look the part with the decals on.

  • 1 month later...

So with last bits added and waiting a few days for some oils to dry, she's done.

Not my best effort on the oils but learned a lot for the next time.

I like the smoking lips nose art under the engine...

Fired up the airbrush to get that DB engine started!

Another great kit from Airfix with lots of options out of the box and really lovely fit overall.

Will post some more pics in the Gallery - thanks for your comments, for sharing your builds and remembering the Battle of Britain.

Stay safe.

Hi Dermot,

great work on your 109. The painting is beautiful!

You are right. It is a beautiful kit indeed and there is an infinity of different paint schemes. So why stop at one...

Congrats!!!
