I have the 1/48 Hurricane IIb that I will be converting to a Sea Hurricane IIb by adding a spare Airfix Sea Hurricane keel and arrester gear.  I have built a Sea Hurricane IIb before, a conversion of the Hasegawa kit but, this one looks like it may be a little easier.  The Airfix keel looks like it should be a good fit..

the decals nice indeed, but, will need to be replaced.

The question @Troy Smith asked was : with what? There aren’t many IIc choices available.

Just to flesh out my thinking. Going back some 20 years ago this sort of model would have been the stuff off dreams both in terms of the plastic, let alone the resin goodness, and let alone the decals.

But for this modeller I normally don’t do Out Of The Box , and now that the decals have gone from After Market to in the box and here lies my problem. For most modellers this boxing or god forbid that Airfix model in my stash will very much suffice for the vast majority of modellers. And here in lies my problem everybody else will want to do these decals, ( of which I’ve seen these decals modelled before ) which I will appreciate other people’s efforts. But I don’t like having my models looking like any body’s else’s efforts hence the comment ‘ decals have got to go’. @Troy Smithis very much correct ‘with what’ ? That too is my problem but with some research and of course some hard to find A.M decals I think I have options……..

There is an easy solution to your dilemma. Use the decals from the Arma Hobby offering on your Airfix kit and vice versa.

Xtradecal have done a sheet

https://www.hannants.co.uk/product/X48240

Note, while the decals look good,  the instructions lack correct details, in that

NF728, 'K1.F' of 760 Naval Air Squadron, Fleet Air Arm, based aboard HMS Ravager, October 4, 1944

and

NF721 'YO.F' of 787Z Naval Air Squadron, Fleet Air Arm, based at RNAS St. Merryn, UK, November, 1943.

both are fitted with rocket plates, and NF728 has no cannon fitted (the plates block the ejector slots)

I have to put up a thread on this,  https://www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.php?/topic/235137113-xtradecal-x48430-sea-hurricane-iic-errata-notes/

I did tell Hannants this, with supporting photos about several of their sheets, but  apparently it was "my opinion"

https://www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.php?/topic/235118780-sea-hurricane-iic-787-sq-listed-as-nf721-witteringtangmere-object-under-wing/

NF721

Fleet-Air-Arm-Sea-Hurricane-Y6F-foregrou

NF728  note black spinner and completely removed cannon, not even the stubs

53336959188_bc81cf80ef_b.jpgSea Hurricanes HMS Ravager NF722 NF 728 compilation by losethekibble, on Flickr

the decals also have no mention of added aerials, note one behind radiator,  and in starboard wing

as have DK Decals

https://www.hannants.co.uk/product/DKD48063

but the IIC are a couple of repeats

there are also options on old Aeromaster and Model Alliance sheets, but inevitably the same suspects.

Glad you’re paying attention Troy. My comment was made in jest. By swapping the decals around, even if the two kits were the same Sea Hurricane variant, Amos would surely still consider it OOTB.

Alternative schemes:

An Aeromaster sheet, 48-439, contains an earlier interpretation of all white NF672, Nicki. No antiglare "panel" on the nose, no 7-K but two bands on the fuselage.

Off the top of my head (it takes time to go through all the FAA references) I have a vague memory of that I have found this interpretation as accurate, based on a pic?

But again, Aeromaster could be less than fully accurate... And neither is my memory! Will keep looking,

errormaster.  The two black stripes in that position look unlikely.  without a photo. Ah

and a good article on the Arma Hobby blog

https://armahobbynews.pl/en/blog/2024/01/26/sea-hurricane-mk-iic-in-the-battle-of-the-atlantic/

Does not give an ID though .  And not mentioned in link is lack of underside stripes,  note the Swordfish with stripes in background.

ARAFM_sea-hurricane-crash-1200.jpg

lack of anti glare likely from this

1137210149_0c4561a18b.jpg

and is the only one to show D-Day stripes, just visible between cannon on starboard wing.

ah, no.... see

https://www.telegraph.co.uk/obituaries/2022/10/13/ken-atkinson-naval-fighter-pilot-whose-sea-hurricane-became/

though usual level of research and accuracy on the Airfix kit,

"On June 27 1944, however, Atkinson crashed Sea Hurricane NF 672, nicknamed “Nicki”, into the barrier of Nairana while on Gibraltar convoy. Atkinson’s was the specific aircraft used by Airfix – with markings K7 and serial number NF 672 on the tail – for their kit of the Sea Hurricane, well-known to schoolboys and older modellers."

while showing a model of the 2010 Airfix kit...

and AFAIK there were no all white Wildcats...

"835 Naval Air Squadron (NAS) launched its Wildcat fighters from the escort carrier Nairana. In their distinctive – and unofficial – all-white camouflage, the Wildcats"

  @iang  ?

anyway...

TELEMMGLPICT000312246813_trans_NvBQzQNjv

which is great shot not in the usual places

All images of the white 835 Sq Sea Hurricanes show camo left as anti glare.

Thanks!

Just proves (again) that my memory cannot be trusted anymore.

I hope, however, that we shouldn't be too harsh on Aero-/errormaster. The amount of easily accessible references/information, that we now take for granted, was perhaps not known, or at least not as easily obtainable then as it is today. As an example, none of the pics of Nicki above shows the top of the engine cowling properly. But the earlier Aeromaster 48-193 seems more accurate... Oh well.

What more we can say about the white Sea Hurricane "Nicki"? Nothing?

Yes we can!

Thanks to our invaluable @Troy Smith we were able - in the literally LAST MINUTE - make one important correction to the 40009 kit 1/48 Sea Hurricane Mk IIc!

What? The squadron marking on the cockpit side, just below the canopy.

Sure, we all know (and all kit producers, including us - Arma Hobby - in 1/72 kit) that it is white or yellow horse on the red shield.

Really?

Troy told us, that it is not a horse. And the shield is not red.

What???

It is! Troy knows it from Ian Burgham, who is son of Lt. Allen Burgham"Nicki's" pilot! And he told it to us just in time we were able to stop decal printing and correct it! It delayed kit release for some time, but - for good reason!

Initially we were not able to belive it (as EVERYBODY knows it was a horse!) - but there are photos!

Nicki from 835 NAS:

spacer.png

Two shields: 804 NAS tiger and 835 "Nicki's":

spacer.png

804 NAS Sea Hurricanes Mk IIc with tiger heads and pilots (Allen Burgham first from the right)

spacer.png

And why it happened? Simple - in June 1943 most pilots of 804 NAS were sent to train on Hellcats, but one group, with their tiger marked Se Hurricanes, went to 835 NAS (composite squadron Swordfish/Sea Hurricane armed) and retained tigers on their planes!

@Troy Smith many, many thanks!!! The decal is corrected! Also great thanks to Mr. Ian Burgham!

I already got 3 of these great hurricane kits, then you go and release the navalized with some nice schemes!

You aren’t alone, I have three too. First time in a long time too that a kit went straight from delivery to my work bench.

And now I will have a fourth.

"We already have the long-awaited decals for 1/48 Sea Hurricane Mk IIc! Thanks to this, from Friday we will start sending model kits to those who pre-ordered them.

We planned to ship the ordered kits earlier, but the manufacturer of our excellent decals, Techmod, was busy preparing to release its own 1/48 Ansaldo A.1 Balilla WWI fighter kit. This delay turned out to be fortunate, because thanks to it we managed to correct the emblem🐯 on the box white Hurricane "Nicki"!"

Like several of you on this thread, I have more than one of these lovely kits in the stash and I'm looking forward to adding a Sea Hurricane to the pile in due course !. In mitigation, at least one of these kits will be donated elsewhere !. I am in the middle of planning and preparing a small display for the Lithuanian Air Force museum to celebrate the one Lithuanian pilot that flew with the RAF during WWII. Flt Lt Romuldas Marinkus was a night fighter specialist on No.1(F) Squadron but his time with the Squadron was short-lived when he was shot down in Hurricane IIc BD949 in February 1942 during the 'Channel Dash' by two Scharnhorst-class battleships. Romunas was made a POW and ended up in Stalag Luft III but became a key member of the committee set up to oversee the Great Escape. Sadly he was one of the 50 aircrew that were executed after their recapture. I have agreed to reproduce his Hurricane Mk.IIc as part of the display, which will also include one of my old uniforms suitable adjusted to represent a wartime No.1 fighter pilots attire, and the Arma kit is the obvious choice for this small project. Stephen (above) has very kindly assisted me already, in sourcing and donating some missing code letters that I will need for the model.

What a wonderful project and tribute to a brave man. I do hope you'll share your build here on BM?

The Great Escape was a towering achievement of men of great spirit, men who refused to be subjugated.

Very nice tribute you have planned.

I have met one of the those who planned the escape, we had Barry Davidson (the scrounger) speak at several of our mess dinners when I was in the RCAF. He was an amazing man and had fascinating stories. He bribed German soldiers to provide items like a camera for forgeries, train schedules, ink, pen nibs, timber, and travel permits crucial to the escapers. He didn’t make it through a tunnel that night, which likely saved his life.  He was played by James Garner in the movie. I am certain he would have known Romuldas.

Barry passed away in 1992 at the age of 82.

I am almost 100% certain he would have known Romuldas. Romuldas possessed a number of additional skills, since he spoke fluent Russian and German as well as his native tongue and, of course English. He also had a photographic memory and one of his contributions to the escape committee was to memorise the various German train timetables and schedules since travel by this means would form a major part of the escape plan for most of those that got out of the tunnel. I suspect this is where Barry and Romuldas would have worked together. As I understand it, Romuldas was actually caught on a train (IIRC in Poland) with three travelling companions. They were posing as four Lithuanians returning home on leave from their work in the construction industry in Germany but of course Romuldas was the only one who could speak Lithuanian. Following capture they did not have to wait long for news that Hitler had ordered their execution.

My bundle arrived today 😁 Mk.IIB+Mk.IIC+Sea Hurri Mk.IIC. Very, very happy and looking forward to building them. Thank you, Arma!

My only quandary is that I'd planned to build the Mk.IIB as an ML-KNIL example in the Asia GB, but one of the box schemes is a Church Stanton-based aircraft, and Church Stanton is near where I grew up! :hmmm:

Cheers,

"The later version of the Hurricane, the Mk II, achieved the greatest glory in its tropical version, operating on distant fronts of World War II, from the Arctic to the Sahara and from Malta to Burma and Ceylon. It was visually distinguished by a large dust filter suspended under the engine. These are the planes you will find in our latest set 1/48 Hurricane Mk IIb trop 40008, each of them took part in epic battles, crucial for the fate of the war, fought in extreme climates.
