Adrian Hills Posted August 12, 2020 Posted August 12, 2020 I have 1/100 scale figures for my build and as also wheels up are essential 😊 1
Greg Law Posted August 13, 2020 Posted August 13, 2020 I think you will have to consider censorship for those with weak stomachs or at least a warning sticker.🤮 1

I could have used the airfix crew with their hands on their laps as they texted their partners that they may well be late for tea as something has come up . 😰 4

I hate to think how many damaged models have crashed to the floor as the stand collapses . Im going to have to add lots of weight to the base and may be reinforce the suport struts. Are you refering to the older transparent 2 part airfix stands Bob ? Here is a mockup of what im aiming for , Got to get angles adjusted a little but as long as the stand can take it i think it should work . All parts of kits just held together with tape. P1030398 by Alistair Pearce, on Flickr I still suprised how small these aircraft are in 1/72 .Must remember to keep my paint mixes for airbrush smaller . Here for your inspiration is something included in the 1956 1/100 scale Faller kit. Note the Heinkel 111, with it's nose ridiculously long, is fathfully represented by the artist as the focal point of this display. 2
Mottlemaster Posted August 15, 2020 Author Posted August 15, 2020 I would love one of those . Looks like it was inspired by Sputnik Respect to any one who rigged that wright Flyer in 1/100
Adrian Hills Posted August 15, 2020 Posted August 15, 2020 For fine rigging I find human hair works well. I recently did a 1/72 Avro 504Q and couldn’t find my thin fishing line and as I had lockdown length hair thought ‘why not’ 😁 1

The glaxzing has now been masked and attached to fuselage . I can not think what it wouuld have been like to do all that masking without a pre cut set . I recmend the Eduard mask set 100% . of course this must be downgraided by 10% to keep in with the algorithm 😉 Its struck me that all parts of this kit moulded in grey plastic fit together with each other perfectly BUT the clear parts are all too big to fit with the grey . Maybe the plastic when setting doesnt shrink as much > Tried to attach glazing with my glue of choise for glazing ,Micro Kristal Klear ,but this is way to thick and adds to the oversize of the front glazing adainst the fuselage by such an amount that the thin clear plastic didnt even meat the fuselage side . Also the bottom glazing section needed to be pulled in to fuselage at point indicated by red arrows . After a nerve racking hour all parts are now attached and only a slight lip occures beteen clear and grey . Mottlemaster Posted August 21, 2020 Author Posted August 21, 2020 I have applied some RLM 02 to cockpit glazing etc i gave a coat of grey primer followd by some Vallejo acrylic metal color Duraliminium . Its the first time i have used this and so far am pleased with ease of use and results . P1030468 by Alistair Pearce, on Flickr 5
Mottlemaster Posted August 23, 2020 Author Posted August 23, 2020 The construction of the other part of the DFD has started . The Special hobby 1/72 Blackburn Skua was a complete un known to me apart from the often mis quoted lines from the Battle of Britain film when Goring is asked what aircraft he needs to win and he requests a squadron of Blackburn Skuas I have made a start by assembling the internals to the fuselage so i could check fit and placement as instructions are rather vage and no locating pins are provided . The parts are reasonably well molded with little flash and not much tidying up to do . Its a tight fit getting all the parts in but seems to fit fine . there is a good amount of detail even before the Photo etch is used . The resin PJ production pilot fits fine and cockpit canopy is nice and clear ,however it comes in one part so i will have to remove rear with razor saw . Dont think there is a masking set for it so will use tamiya tape . P1030469 by Alistair Pearce, on Flickr P1030470 by Alistair Pearce, on Flickr P1030471 by Alistair Pearce, on Flickr As i dont have any british interior green and will not (probably) need it again for a few years i will mix my own from paints in stock . I hope to get fuselage buttond up by end of next week . 7
GREG DESTEC Posted August 23, 2020 Posted August 23, 2020 That Skua is a nice looking kit. I have never built a Special Hobby kit before but have read that they are challenging. Good luck with the next stage. Cheers Greg 😁

You have to think your way trough them and spend some time cleaning up parts but the fit is suprisingly good and the detail is superb . This is the first 1/72 scale one iv built and im thinking the detail is up there with most 1/48 kits . I recon if there is a subject that takes your fancy then give it a go . The interior is now painted in Mr Color aircraft grey-green which looks about right . Now ready to close up . I can add the pilot and rear gunner later . P1030474 by Alistair Pearce, on Flickr 7
Mottlemaster Posted August 31, 2020 Author Posted August 31, 2020 The Skua has moved on at a fast pace and the 111 is close to being ready for its RLM 70 , 71 and 65 . I may find the time to get the 65 on today . P1030476 by Alistair Pearce, on Flickr 7
Mottlemaster Posted September 12, 2020 Author Posted September 12, 2020 I have been spending most of my modelling time on the Skua which is just aproaching painting stage with most construction completed . took ages to work out a way to do it with the undercarage raised as Special Hobby never intended this to be the case . I will post some pics sometime towards the end of next week when i get back from a holiday . The He 111 has now had its main colours applied and some work to the fire damaged wing and engine . Any one who lives near the M5 in the Southwest of England will probably witnesed the sad demise of a burning air cooled VW campervan on the side of the motorway . the first thing to go is the paintwork and this applies to aircraft aswell . Greg Law Posted September 12, 2020 Posted September 12, 2020 Alistair you are getting artistic. Careful now you don't get ideas about removing an ear for a more asymmetric look.....🤥 3

Greg Law Posted September 13, 2020 Posted September 13, 2020 So true. Even with only two cases a day here a lot of people have taken to wearing masks.👍
Mottlemaster Posted September 26, 2020 Author Posted September 26, 2020 Im not far from completion of the 111 and also just starting final painting of the Skua . As the 111 has been almost completly assembled its weight has increased significantly over that when i tried the mock up on the Airfix DFD stand ast the start of the build . Im not sure the stand can suport the weight . to aid stability i have added some scrap lead to the stand base glued in with some Gorilla glue . I think the risk of the comlete stand capsising now has been removed . P1030496 by Alistair Pearce, on Flickr I find lots of lead in local fields when metal detecting (another hoby of mine ) The wheels up on the Skua has been completed with the help of some plastic card P1030495 by Alistair Pearce, on Flickr love the Skua kit . Fire and smoke constructed useing stuffing from dogs toy glued to wire from champine cork P1030492 by Alistair Pearce, on Flickr painted up its too hot to handle P1030494 by Alistair Pearce, on Flickr 7
Adrian Hills Posted October 2, 2020 Posted October 2, 2020 WOW. This diorama is really shaping up well. I love the bullet holes and your expertise on the 'flame' colours 1
PlaStix Posted October 7, 2020 Posted October 7, 2020 VERY impressive modelling going on here!!! Looking forward to seeing how this progresses! Kind regards, Stix 1

Onde apon a time i used to start a fire with an old tyre (This was the recomended way used by the national Trust when i worked for them ) thats very much the same as as oil fire . Its almost there ,only the tdidley bits and bobd to do now . I have had to re desighn the Airfix stand as with all the weight of the completed He 111 it would have collapsed . I have replaced the weak plastic stands with some brass tube and rod . Result is much stronger and also gave me the opertunity to put more realistic distance between the two aircraft . P1030509 by Alistair Pearce, on Flickr Thought about painting the brass black but have decided to stick with the brass . Next update will be complete and together 4
Mottlemaster Posted October 13, 2020 Author Posted October 13, 2020 Thanks Ozzy and everone else who has visited my build thred over the past few months . I am going to call this project completed . I am very pleased with how its come out ,though i would never have guessed how much cash iv thrown at ion things like the popblurs . resin pilots , brass tube ,dog toy and FAA paint . The price of the He 111 kit was almost insignificant . The dog toy was gutted for its stuffing . Work done included Bullet holes Modified injurd pilot featherd prop Scorched airframe . This was loads of fun and i would concider doing another DFD fo a G/B . there are loads of good box arts for inspiration . The Skua was something i never would have conciderd ,it opend my eyes a little away from Luftwaffe subjects P1030512 by Alistair Pearce, on Flickr P1030513 by Alistair Pearce, on Flickr P1030514 by Alistair Pearce, on Flickr P1030515 by Alistair Pearce, on Flickr P1030516 by Alistair Pearce, on Flickr P1030517 by Alistair Pearce, on Flickr P1030518 by Alistair Pearce, on Flickr P1030519 by Alistair Pearce, on Flickr P1030520 by Alistair Pearce, on Flickr P1030521 by Alistair Pearce, on Flickr P1030522 by Alistair Pearce, on Flickr P1030523 by Alistair Pearce, on Flickr And one last thing .......
