This is my He 111 H-4 project that I'm finishing here as approved. This won't go into the Galley, but there will be finished images in this thread.

I have been working on this for maybe a year. There have been lots of ups and downs in the build. Here is the link to the WIP build thread.

This is a model of a KG 26 plane that was in the 15th of August northern raids. It was shot down into the sea, but the crew survived.

The plane is an H-4 which carried the torpedo's on external racks. To achieve this I have used the ICM He 111H-3 kit and taken the

external bomb rack part from the H-6 torpedo bomber kit. I think there maybe a small miss match in doing this that needed quite a bit

of filler to over come. I will leave the rest of the issues in the work in progress thread. A lot of them are most likely of my own making,

But the engines issue I had is worth reading if you are going to build this model.

This is where I'm at.

Its Good to see you and your 111 here Greg . Whats your plan for this bird ?

Cheers

Alistair

At the moment is just to finish it. I might have to replace the canopy in the end, but I won't know until I remove the masks.

Hi Greg, in the countdown to this GB starting I have re-read your build thread to look at the problems you encountered, having looked at the kit parts I wondered if some of the problems with the engine panels and wing root to fuselage could be better resolved by assembling the wings separately from the fuselage.  The Airfix Lancaster had the same problems and because the fuselage spars went out to form part of the wheel wells the solution was to cut off the spars at the wheel well, that still leaves enough spar protruding to fit the wings to the fuselage.  Thoughts on this idea?

I really can't  say on that, but maybe worth ago. My problem could have been using the H-6 bomb rack part.

I keep looking at my Heinkel book and on the back cover is a great profile of a kg26 He 111H-6 torpedo bomber.  1H-FK. In sand colours with green blotches. I also have the decals for it. This is a Med bird. So don't be surprised if I suddenly start working on this down the track. It would be the ICM kit.

Today I started the masking of the RLM65.  Bit of a job but I should be able to paint the RLM71 by the weekend.

Good progress on my part today. Got the masking of the RLM65 done and have painted the first coat of RLM71 on. In the morning I will see if it needs a second coat or touch up. This will allow me to mask and paint the RLM70 over the weekend. Once that is done I will upload a progress image.

Gave the plane another  coat of RLM71 today, so I'm a bit behind schedule.  I focused on the Ju 88A-1 instead today. Tomorrow I will start the masking for the RLM70.

Progress today was getting the RLM70 on. Unfortunately I had a few very small spots of the RLM71 lift when I removed the masking tape. I will sort that tomorrow.

Still I'm happy with the overall paint job. I will keep the images till I get the decals on. The "M" will be hand made.

Yes we do get a bit of dust. In my case it is the fact that I have to share my paint garage with 30 farm cats. The amount of floating hair is amazing.

Also in the last few days we appear to have attracted some more covid dust. Today we are back too lockdown 3 in Auckland and 2 in the rest of the country.

We don't muck around with this thing.

Just for fun here is the He 111H-4 with its escort. Both these planes I'm building here were on the 15th August Northern raid.

If you look carefully you can just see the Bf 110D's belly tank. This is my method for pre-shading. The Heinkel was done the same way.

This is on hold for a few days. I'm just catching up my other builds so I can make the decals at the same time.

Started the decals today. I made the white 'M' it just needs a few days to reseal it. Then it has to be cut out which will be tricky.

I'm doing battle with a white 'M' at the moment.  This code letter is the home made one. It has taken 4 of them to get one on.

I still have to add the micro-sol. The first one went on nicely until I added the micr-sol which moved it. Wish me luck.

As you can see I got it on safe. This is the codes. The spinners are white as well.

Both sides done now.

Thanks Craig.  This is the good side. The othersides cockpit glazing fit isn't as good. I'm generally not happy with it, but it is what it is. (Seems to be a common statement these days)

I'm hoping to attach the glazing soon, though it sounds like it's a pain to get a good fit.  Have you made the mid-upper gunners seat and gun mount yet, as soon as I removed them from the sprue they just fell to bits, I will replace them with some brass wire as trying to fit the Eduard p/e "canvas" seat  or the MG 15 to these flimsy plastic bits would be impossible. :crosseyed:

yes I made the seat. I had the same issue. However I did manage to get the Eduard seat in. If I remember right the plastic part was in pieces which I glued to the Eduard seat

I haven't tried the gun mount yet. That will be done at the end of the build.

This morning I'm adding the last six small decals so I can clear coat it later today.

The glazing was a major problem for me. It was mainly because the normal glues weren't holding and I ended up using CA. I'm dreading what I will find when I remove the masks. The first fit wasn't too bad, but it went downhill from there. By the time I was done, four fits later, it is less than even my low standards find acceptable. However, i don't think I can improve it.

You must take into account the round gun dome when you set it up. It is a case of needing three hands.

Luckily I have another H-3 kit I can use the canopy from if it is too bad.

O good, another three handed juggling task,  I'll take my blood pressure medication before I start.

All the decals are done. There was quite a lot. I will clear coat it tomorrow.

It is now clear coated the next thing is the undercarriage and bits and pieces.
