I love that organizer you have.  My organization is pretty ad hoc.

I meant to add that it's made a huge difference! My work table was so cluttered up before, that I had an area of about 15" x 15" to work in!

I'm probably going to need another drawer unit to go at the bottom as I'm collecting different types of paint from different makers! :)

Cheers,

Mark

Here are a few pics of the latest Tomahawk to start being built :):

Actually, the cockpit assembly was built for the very first, failed, attempt that has become my paint mule, and which was set aside when the CMK resin bits arrived. I actually didn't break the control column! Is this a first?

The gun butts need painting and there's a Yahu IP to go on. Other than that, with a bit of detail painting and some masking tape seat belts, I should be able to close up the fuselage soon :)

Cheers,

Mark

I'm going to follow this, my first Tomahawk is in progress, some useful tips.

Hi and welcome aboard! It's a great little kit, isn't it?

I've not managed to make much progress over the last couple of weeks, but did do a little detail painting and a wash on the cockpit components.

Hopefully, there'll be some appreciable progress soon!

Kind regards,

Mark

As mentioned above, here is the current state of play with Tomahawk #4:

Just a smidgeon of detail painting on the sidewalls, and a bit on the cockpit area - I think the aluminium on the seat is a bit shiny, so I'll have to tone that down a tad! I'm also going to add some basic seatbelts from masking tape, and there's a Yahu IP to go on the IP panel.

Cheers,

After you add the belts give the seat a wash in a grey or tan color to simulate dirt and wear.

Thanks, CF4U, that sounds like a good plan! It's Vallejo's White Aluminium (I forget the reference number), and it seems very bright! :)

Yes I have the bottle and it is very bright, very good for certain applications though.

More small progress on the fourth Tomahawk, which I think has brought the interior to its conclusion.

Yahu instrument panel fitted, and some etched brass seatbelts added. The latter came from an Arma Hobby Hurricane Mk.I Expert set, so not really correct but I think it looks effective enough:

Fuselage halves joined together:

And a trial fit of the fuselage to the lower wing:

Next up should be permanently fitting the lower wing to the fuselage, following which I'll fit the upper wing panels and tail surfaces.....

Cheers for now,

Mark

Looks excellent, Mark! 👍 I especially like how the wash appeared on the sidewalls.

Hi Nikolay,

many thanks, that's very kind of you!

For the wash, I just used a mixture of Humbrol weathering powders, earth and smoke colours, mixed into some water. I also add a spot of washing up liquid to reduce the surface tension of the water and allow it to flow more easily. Once its dry, I usually give it a brush over with a stiffish paintbrush to blend it out a bit, and I then seal it with a quick coat of matt clear lacquer.

Hoping to get this one moved along now!

Cheers,

Mark

Nice work Mark, that's looking splendid :)

Thanks, Ced, that's very kind of you and praise indeed! Its a surprisingly effective cockpit OOB, but I do think adding the belts makes all the difference.

Cheers,

I think the cockpit looks pretty spectacular.  I'll have to look into those Yahu instrument panels -- they look very nice.  Great job on the side walls too!  I've got a couple of these in the stash, so I'm taking notes...

My opinion is that aftermarket seat belts give the most bang for the buck.  Most often the seat is the only thing seen through the canopy unless you look hard and I've found that putting seat belts on makes it look like I did a lot more detailing than I actually did. :D

Thanks! :) that's very kind of you! I do like those Yahu IPs as they have a nice relief to them, and the gauge glasses are pre-glossed. I've got some for my Tamiya Zeroes and they're equally nice - the only reason I didn't use them was they were a different shade of green to the cockpit colour I was using (plus the kit IP with decals works really well!). The sidewalls are a bit uninspiring in the raw, but they've really "popped" with some paint and a dirty wash :)

Totally agree - further up this thread in one of the other Tomahawks I've started I used CMK's resin interior parts, which I have to say are really nice, but I'm not convinced that they'll be any too visible when the models are finally finished. The only thing I would say is that the Airfix kit lacks the seat back framing which is quite visible on the real thing.

Well, I can't really believe it was November when I last posted anything remotely modelling related on here. There was a distinct drop in mojo pre-Christmas, and nothing happened really until a couple of weeks ago, courtesy of Airfix's new Spitfire Vc.

So with a bit of enthusiasm rekindled, I set about adding something to this long-running saga. As you can see, I've added the upper wing panels and tail planes, and the upper and lower cowlings. This was followed by an overall coat of Stynylrez, which I've used as a witness coat to highlight the flaws. Of which there were more than I'd hoped for.

Despite my best efforts, the upper cowling still wasn't a great fit, so there's been a bit of sanding there to bring it into line with the rest of the fuselage. And speaking of the fuselage, its joints were still quite visible so these have been treated to successive coats of Stynylrez which have been smoothed back with fine wet-and-dry and Tamiya sanding sponges, and hopefully are now alright.

One little issue I didn't notice until quite a while after the event was that I'd glued the lower wing on ever so slightly skewed. Barely noticeable, but the vent thingy at the back is not quite central, so I've cheated a little and sanded it on one side to even things up a bit!

The biggest issue I've had recently was in attaching the tail planes: on both sides there was a sizable step up from the root fillet to the tail plane proper. This has been built up with PPP and then had successive coats of Stynylrez as per the fuselage joints.

The whole model has has a rub over with a fine Tamiya sanding sponge, which I'm hoping with reduce the impact of the panel lines on the finished model, and as you can see from the photos there's a bit of PPP along the wing root joint, and more particularly at the trailing edge, and at the undercarriage knuckles:

Hopefully it won't be another two months before the next instalment!

Thanks, Ced, praise indeed! I really want to get this finished now, and I'm hoping the prep work (mostly rectifying my mistakes!) will have paid off!

Good to see you back on the block, coming along nicely.

Where are you located? I suspect we might almost be neighbours!

Hi Tony,

Thanks! Its been a while since I've felt like doing much, so hopefully my new-found mojo will sustain itself! I'm located just off the M1 at junction 30, so not far from Worksop. How about you?

Cheers,

Just down the A60 from Worksop in Cuckney. The border is a funny, snaky thing hereabouts.

Well, I'm blowed! I'm in Barlborough - literally 7 miles away straight through Clowne! Small world! We'll have to meet up when this madness abates!

Cheers,

Mark
