yet another Ferrari 1/8th F40 Engine

Good progress on the heads today. I’ve been drawing a thing that doesn’t exist, but contains all the common elements of the right and left cylinder heads. 
 

now this is done, I’ve just duplicated and rotated it as you can see here. Tomorrow I will set about making a right and left hand version from these clones, which should be straightforward enough.

also got the engine mounts done, which are surprisingly complex beasts. 

 

I’ve also got all the additional data and measurements I was waiting for to draw the dreaded centre plenum, so I will tackling that next.

 

As I mentioned earlier, This is the bit that will be printed full size in magnesium and used on a real F40. No pressure at all then.
 

Well about 3bar, but you know what I mean. That was an air intake joke - you don’t see many of them, if I carry on like this I’ll be exhausted. I’ll get me coat.

Back on the horse (prancing variety to be specific) with the F40 today. Got the throttle bodies nailed I think, so on the home straight now.

Lovely work: your artistry here has got me looking at 3D printers: the fund has already begun. Not sure I'd be able to design much but there seem to be lots of files available to use as a starting point. Anyway thanks for the inspiration!

Not a great day today, uncovered an incorrect dimension dating back to May that has thrown the cylinder banks out of alignment, so having to rework the block to correct this. To add insult to injury, had a fusion crash just after spending most of the day redrawing it, and an unrecoverable error in the recovery file, so need to do it all again tomorrow.

That was yesterday - I didn’t submit the post. I’ve pretty much corrected everything now,  although it was a real pain, some of things I ‘worked around’ have magically gone away now I’ve squared the circle, and a lot of stuff that was niggling me has vanished too.
 

OK so I lost a day, but I’ve ended up with something properly accurate top to bottom, I’m probably the only person that would notice the error in the first place, but that’s not the point - the engineers curse I guess, the right way is the only way.

OK, that was a real slog. I have completely redrawn the crankcase now to overcome the error in the cylinder block offset. This was a good thing, as a lot of niggles have just gone away now, there were bits and pieces that just didn't quite sit right with the photos, but it's all snapped into place now.

 

I've no doubt this looks exactly the same as before, it's a 10mm offset at full scale, but I'm glad I corrected it even if it was a hell of alot of effort.

The critical thing is that the intake plenum now precisely matches the real world geometry and angles - this is the bit we are going to print full-size from magnesium, and fit to an actual Ferrari, so I kind of need to get this bit right.

This bit wasn't easy!

 

I need to start printing soon, the CAD is 90% complete finally, just need a few more measurements for the outer Plenums and I'm good to go.

Frank, yes that's the plan.

 

The thing I've got in my favour is that it's only touch points are silicon tubes - there are no hard-surface mating faces, so there is some margin for error, you can see the flexible hoses coming from the turbos here

The bottom side is more difficult to see but the large cad plated bands are concealing silicon hoses going to the 8 throttle bodies here

OK the three parts I'm making need to fit each other, but I have full control over that:-

Other than that, there's some non-critical bits like the mounting of the 4 ignition coils, but no hard-fit. This is why I'm attempting it, other than it being a bloody difficult shape, I think it has a good chance of success, we'll see shortly!

OK good, now I can see that you have some leeway in fitting it.    Just curious why there's a market for such pieces?    These should never wear out (??) so maybe there are some lost to accidents or fires but surely it's a pretty small market.   If this is something you'd rather not discuss here I'll understand.   Exciting project though!

It was easy to get close in fairness, the last little bit to 'correct' was a killer. The 80/20 law in action!

There’s about 30 years between these, Pocher original on the left, my guessed attempt from last year in the middle, and latest on the right.

That is superb Nick. If I may I noticed there is some sort of harp like emblem on the bottom left of the real thing, on the right hand side of the leftmost wavy lines that I cannot see in your version. Since you faithfully reproduced every other little detail is that an intended omission? Certainly not a criticism just an observation!

Not Dickensian Nick ... just good old fashioned craftsmanship.    As we speak I'm soldering up stainless steel rod as I fabricate a railing around the deck of a boat I'm making (all by hand too!)    Dickens would approve!    

 

Still, your project is wonderful.

Yup, I meant to come back to that and forgot. I’ll be no-doubt printing another at some stage. Actually, I should have masked the flesh coloured bits before applying the texture anyway, so I need to redo it for that. As a first print I don’t think it’s far off though.

I missed threaded tube as well on the side plenums. I need a better print method too, I’m not happy with the current support setup.

Got my brass whittling finished today and the stand soldered up and in primer. Also finished drawing and got the first test print of the RH head off too which looks pretty good, one wall is too thin but an easy fix, other than that looking OK. Photos tomorrow.

Good progress today, finalised one head and near completion on the other, got both valve covers drawn as well as correcting all the cam gears and spacers.

 

Just got the water galleries and pump to do as well as finishing off the magnetos and tweaking the throttle bodies to add actuators and end stops etc. So actually in with a chance of finishing this I think now.

As promised, here's the 'real world' progress, stand cut out and soldered up from brass, and first print of one head, also the castors are multi-part prints from resin.

For cutting out the brass end plate, I found yet another great feature of fusion, where you print can a 2D scale drawing, which in this case, I printed actual size on a sticker, put it on my brass sheet, and used it for drilling/cutting to make the plate .

Got the water pump done today, just the side water galleries, the back face of one head, magnetos and a bit of tidying up left to do. Then a printathon will ensue.
