yet another Ferrari 1/8th F40 Engine

Recommended Posts

Looks superb!

Can you do a Cosworth DFV next please?!

Or even better a Coventry Climax FWMV?

I just remembered that a coupla years ago a guy was 3D printing a BMW 801 engine in about 1/5 or maybe 1/4 scale.

I’m getting close to how I want the block to print now after about 20 iterations, here’s  one in paint.

im grappling with banding issues with the printer that I just can’t get to the bottom of, otherwise pretty happy with the latest model and support structures.

Currently working on the throttle bodies which are fairly complex, curvy beasts with different tube profiles top and bottom. Pretty much cracked them I think

Lots of time wasted getting the new printer set up. Finally got it reliable and dialled in.

Our American cousins would probably call it ‘a journey’.

I wouldn’t.

51346380213_c6ddbdeff3_h.jpg

anyway, I’ve learnt a lot, and getting to be happy with smoothness and accuracy of what’s dropping out of it now.

started work on the all-important and massively complex plenums as well, these are crucial parts that will be printed full size in magnesium for use in a genuine F40 LM.

No pressure then.

Well about 3 bar actually, but you know what I mean.

Looks like you have quite the Ferrari engine block stockpile going there. I could sure use one to remake the bottom end of my engine before I get too much farther along on the build with the autograph transkit. It’s funny, as detailed as the transkit is, I’m still not satisfied and find myself making changes over and above.

I admire your patience with this engine project and I know that you have invested way more time in it than you probably had in mind when you started. What is the end game here? Are you going to just do a stand alone model or are you planning on putting it in a Pocher F40? I think that I remember earlier on that you said that the new engine would probably not fit in the model due to Pocher having to make concessions to make an engine fit inside the model.

I know that as I look at my partially built engine sitting inside the frame and I’m still working on the turbo pipes, I can see that I’m going to have to pretty much get a kinda bare block mounted in the frame and then have to add the exhaust manifolds and turbos when the engine is in place. I don’t see how I can maneuver an assembled engine in and through the frame. Anyway, that is what I see with just the regular kit and transkit. Well, maybe the transkit that has been modified to an LM version exhaust etc. It’s funny how a $1800 transkit isn’t enough detail to add  :rage:

Well, keep up the great work! This engine is going to be something else! You are taking details to the nth degree, great job!!

With that many spare blocks you could make a diorama of the foundry!!

Great stuff, the details are superb, the slightly off centre B in the circles the top of the casting, the radial date stamp marking and the letter stamped F120A are all exactly like a real casting!

So well past the point of reason and happily mumbling my way past the other side, I'm now finally satisfied with my block, I now have two identical ones (to prove repeatability) that came off the printer in 5 odd hours each and, if I do say so myself, are finally perfect. The supports couldn't physically be any smaller, anti aliasing buggered them up because they were so fine, I've now allowed for this (manually) and they leave no  scarring at all. 'An angels breath' holding stuff up.

The things, normal sane people can't see, that have been troubling me, are finally sorted - everything cylindrical (supported or otherwise) is, surface is crisp and smooth but not soft on detail, holes are round etc, etc. It makes me happy anyway even if I will be the only person on the planet to notice it :)

If anyone is still there - thanks for sticking with my windmill chasing nonsense.

In the unlikely event that you haven’t seen the ‘target’ here’s the real thing :)

Now I've got the print about right,  it's time to start obsessing about the paint and finish.

Im happy with the surface finish now, but still grappling with the colour, these two are the closest I think

These drawings are so cool that I almost wish I had something to design in Fusion again ... almost!

Nice work Nick.

First prints of these have just come off.

Very happy, now I know what I’m doing a bit more, they are much more crisp, flat and true than version 1.

I’ve also learned when to make separate parts (basically always!) so you get that super-crisp demarcation you just can’t get even with ultra-careful-head-magnifier painting.

photos to follow - although off to Rewind North for the weekend in the morning. So no updates for a while!

It's a slippery slope when you start modelling stuff that can't be seen but hey, in for a penny...

Wow

All of this is stunning, it's amazing how far technology has advancing recently to be able to produce stuff like this at home 😮

I'm not sure how I've skipped this post, but I'm tagging along from now :)

Bonus. Stuff even seems to fit.

Got my clearance calculations somewhere near then.

a few tweaks needed, but not bad for a first print.
