OutcastJoel
I have been distracted by some other projects but I have finally got back on it. Colour errors have now been sorted: 20200802_153005_Film2 by OutcastJoel, on Flickr I have added a little more detail to the engine: 20200803_202606_Film2 (1) by OutcastJoel, on Flickr Sorted the gun bays and added some clips for the bay covers (I later worked out I had too many, several of which were in the wrong place)! 20200801_211657_Film2 by OutcastJoel, on Flickr 20200802_095111_Film2 by OutcastJoel, on Flickr

OutcastJoel
@Stew Dapple, thank you! I still wasn't entirely happy with my work on the engine or cockpit but couldn't put my finger on why. I messed around on the internet (for far too long) and realised that I was missing control panel on the left hand side of the cockpit and more importantly, going through photos of the Merlin at the science museum, what looks like some sort of piping on the kit is actually the leads to the spark plugs. So I knocked up a panel for the side which is a little crude but by my standards pretty good. 20200812_234911_Film2 by OutcastJoel, on Flickr And I chopped off the pipey bits and replaced them with plastic rod for the sparkplugs and 0.5mm braided wire for the leads. The main length of the pipe bit does look like the leads are in some sort of tube in photos of the real thing so I stuck with airfix's offering on that. 20200812_234931_Film2 by OutcastJoel, on Flickr I also finally got around to painting the cockpit halves, does anyone know what the black framed squares are on the escape panel? I can't find any photos showing them on the internet. 20200813_001827_Film2 by OutcastJoel, on Flickr The instrument panel bits have now been hacked about and attached them to the Yuhu panel. 20200809_205940_Film2 by OutcastJoel, on Flickr
OutcastJoel
I have managed to get it all buttoned up, I have a fair bit of filling and sanding ahead of me but hopefully I should get the first layers of paint on tomorrow. 20200814_213659_Film2 by OutcastJoel, on Flickr The joining of wings and fuselage has made it very clear what a flipping beast this is! 20200828_213814_Film2 by OutcastJoel, on Flickr
Stew Dapple
That is indeed a beast mate For your consideration; I don't know what Montex's references regarding the spinner colours were - or indeed Xtradecals' when they portrayed it the same way - but I was flicking through the Battle of Britain Combat Archives last night and they describe the spinner as being Oxford Blue, White and Cambridge Blue respectively rather than blue, white and red. to represent the Universities' colours which, given the squadron's background, sounds equally feasible to me. Bugle07
Do like that instrument panel, and the interior paintwork. Coming together nicely! How's the wings dihedral holding up? Geoff

Cheers, Stew Thank you for the heads up! I have a feeling I had read that somewhere. Personally I am planning to go with the red for the lightning flash and red/white/blue on the spinner because I think it looks nicer that way. Also, sorry to be dim, but when you say Battle of Britain Archives, is this a specific book or actual archives? 10 hours ago, Bugle07 said: Do like that instrument panel, and the interior paintwork. It is a very nice kit considering the age, more like a 90s kit (or better than certain 2010s releases Airfix...). The dihedral seems to be spot on. The fit on fuselage to wing is excellent, almost snapfit and the wing angles stayed (about) right as a result.

OutcastJoel
I am still making absurdly slow progress but I finally have got the airbrush out again. I initially tried with Alclad enamels but after three hours of constant clogging I gave up and used Colour Coats and Humbrol instead. 20200919_154751_Film2 by OutcastJoel, on Flickr IMG_20200921_212547 by OutcastJoel, on Flickr
OutcastJoel
I found that the Montex vinyl masks didn't like sticking to the textured surface on the fuselage so there needs to be some touching up. Other than that, it is starting to look like it is supposed to! 20200927_132633_Film2 by OutcastJoel, on Flickr

Bugle07
Some seriously impressive masking there, excellent base for the fun stuff to go onto. Bring on the weathering! What are you going to be using on her? Geoff
OutcastJoel
Thank you Geoff, On reflection I would have sprayed the roundels first and then used tamiya tape for the lightning stripe. I ended up doing so much touching up because the montex mask had lifted that I might as well have gone that route to start with. (I am not knocking Montex, it is just that vinyl doesn't like sticking to the texture on the fuselage of this kit.) I have a complicated relationship with weathering. I am not especially good and I tend to overthink it because I start with a nice looking model and spend the whole time being certain that I am about to make it worse. As a result (and because it looks pretty clean in the one photo I have seen of this aircraft) I will keep it pretty light: - Panel wash in brown (MIG). - Exhaust Staining wash (AK) -Gun staining (probably oil paints) -Oil leak stains (again oil paints) I want to get a bit of variation in the paint so I might try a dot filter a la Nightshift, but it is another technique I am not especially good at yet. I also like the idea of having mud spatter above the wheels but I don't actually know how to do that so I might leave it until I figure out a technique that works. The other bit I am wrestling with is getting dried mud on the tyres and muddy boot prints on the wing.
OutcastJoel
Unfortunately I don't think I can finish the diorama in the next fortnight but on the bright side I have managed to get the big Hurricane done! Once I have taken a bit of a break from 1/24, I plan to sort out the diorama for the end of the year. It is a great kit and I have learned a lot along the way. I think oddly that this big scale really shows up any flaws in my work far more than my usual scales of 1/72 and 1/700. I certainly want to pick up another of these in a few years when I have improved a bit further. 20201015_201917_Film2 by OutcastJoel, on Flickr 20201015_202052_Film2 by OutcastJoel, on Flickr 20201015_201946_Film2 by OutcastJoel, on Flickr 20201015_202315_Film2 by OutcastJoel, on Flickr 20201015_202354_Film2 by OutcastJoel, on Flickr 20201015_202109_Film2 by OutcastJoel, on Flickr 20201015_202052_Film2 by OutcastJoel, on Flickr 20201015_202515_Film2 by OutcastJoel, on Flickr 20201015_202621_Film2 by OutcastJoel, on Flickr
StevSmar
Great job! I think you're definitely right that the larger the scale the more flaws stand out.
Stew Dapple
The other thing about larger scale aircraft, not easy to photograph without either cutting bits out of shot or being so far away that the details aren't visible Do remember to upload some pics to the Gallery, Joel, you've got a cracking Hurricane there Cheers, Stew
