Hobbyboss Mi-4P – Буджи the Little Helicopter

Recommended Posts

Morning all,

Just completed a fun build of the Hobbyboss Mi-4, in Aeroflot colours:

An excellent kit, and highly recommended. Very well engineered, particularly the way the complex 2 storey interior fits together. I also used a bit of etch from Dream Model, but quite a bit of it was unusable and I would recommend going Eduard instead.

I meant to make this a simple OOB build, but I went off on one and made an Mi-4P to justify the civilian scheme, this meant making square windows, civilianising the interior and making spatted wheels. The markings are not authentic. The decals are from a simple but well made sheet by C3D, these markings are actually for a medevac helicopter but are similar to this photo:

This was my first helicopter and I take my hat off to rotary wing specialists, it can be challenging! I haven’t got the hang of blade droop, in fact I trashed the kit rotors trying to bend them with hot water and had to bodge from there. Also the undercarriage is very delicate, and I would advise only adding the front wheels at the very last moment. But hopefully the next heli will be a step up.

The Lada is probably anachronistic being a 70s model, but I couldn’t resist!

Thanks for stopping by,

Harry

Mi-4 look very nice !

VAZ-2101 Zhiguli* (west know as Lada)  probably more like his parent, Fiat, but not look as VAZ-2101

believe it to the person who long time ago once had a next model VAZ-2103 Lada.

😉

But the most interesting thing is that in the village where my grandfather lived, our neighbors had a VAZ-2101 of exactly the same color as Your model, the color was called "coffee with milk" i.e.  the color You have chosen is accurate enough.

👍

By the way, in that period, in the 70s, car numbers were black with white numbers and letters.

P.S. Буджи, (I was in a perplexed

for some time) there is no such word in Russian, the budgerigar is written as "волнистый попугайчик" but it's very long for titles,

maybe a "канарейка"(canary) is more suitable?

____________

* - this post is also (again!) sponsored by Western medical clinics specializing in the treatment of dislocation of the tongue!

😁😁

Thanks Aardvark, yes sorry for confusing both non Brits and those unfamiliar with the Russian alphabet... "Budgie" was a friendly helicopter in childrens' stories written by Sarah Ferguson, Duchess of York and ex wife of the controversial Prince Andrew (questionably useful spare son of The Queen):

As for the Zhiguli, its a work in progress as I learn how to do 3d design, but thank you for recognising it as a 2101! Maybe I'll do a Шестёрка next, more square and easy. These cars were quite popular in Scotland where I'm from, back in the day, and I remember them from childhood.

Lovin' this little civvie chopper. Fantastic interior and love the car.

Awesome 👍

P.S.

If you go for a MiL Mi-26 as your next helicopter, you won't have to worry about blade droop as the blade droop is moulded into the blades. But you might have to worry about shelf space.

Very nice helicopter and I do like the diorama very much. Your figures are very well done. A very believable scene.

Very nice job you have done and hats off to your putting the work in to makeing it a civil version.  Would love to see one of these in 1/48 scale as there are so many cool schemes for it.

The biggest mistake that catches in eye is the very large

front and rear

racks that hold the roof:

Original was more elegant.

Also I see little problem with radii of curvature of the leading edge of the engine compartment cover.

Thanks again Serge, yes it is a bit wrong, and my apologies to AvtoVAZ 🥴. My excuse is that to have slim pillars the model would have to have (correctly) curved screens, and this a bit beyond me at the moment - it either needs a vacformed or plunge moulded part, or I may be able to print clear parts in the future if I can get a decent finish. It also may be possible to bodge something with some plastic bottle. Future experiments!

Exquisite build. I'm not normally a rotary wing fan but there's something about your build & dio that really appeals to me. I think it gives a good sense of a bygone era.
