Tim R-T-C Posted October 28, 2020 Share Posted October 28, 2020 Some time in September 1940 while the air battle rages, a new forward airfield has opened at the Flying Club in Godermersham, Kent. Pilots from a few squadrons have flown in to examine facilities at what will be a forward refuelling base for them. Famous future ace P. Brothers in LGZ suffered a puncture on landing and sits awaiting repair, chatting with RR. Standford Tuck and the base office. Arther Clowes emerges from the command hut having received word of and inbound Luftwaffe flight. All three pilots would achieve Ave status and survive the war. Watching his plane being rearmed, L.W Stevens was one of 'the few' who sadly never saw out the war, being killed in 1941. Meanwhile the essential support work continues, I wanted to include the armourers, the repair team, as well as the WAAF Officer, chatting to the Flying Club caretaker who has maintained his Dig for Victory garden, and even the airfield catering team delivering supplies for the makeshift kitchen. The scene is of course fictional but my small tribute to both The Few and also to those who supported them and were very much in the line of fire too. The planes are the Sweet Hurricane Mk.1s with stock decals, lovely builds. Buildings are Metcalfe cardboard kits with some adaptation. Figures are a mix of Arrowhead Minatures RAF crew and generic model railway figures. The Hillman Tilly in (hopefully!) authentic colours (sources vary widely) is a whitemetal kit from Arrowhead, while the Starter Trolleys are Brengun brass and resin. Airfix 1:24 kit with Montex markings, Yuhu instrument panel and HGW seat belts. 601 Sqn spent much of the Battle at RAF Tangmere in West Sussex although the only photo I have seen of this aircraft is from RAF Exeter in September of 1940. UF*S was flown by Squadron Leader Michael Robinson who became an ace during the Battle. jean Posted October 30, 2020 Share Posted October 30, 2020 Hi everyone, here are some photos of my first completed kit within a GB time frame!!!! So may I be speeding up a bit? The kit is the 1/72 Airfix Me Bf 109 E-4. I chose to go with the kit's decals depicting the E-4 of Franz von Werra, as I thought the camo was not the usual run of the mill. It is a great build, but my clumsiness reached highs I did not know existed!!! So that delayed and frustrated me at times. But I have another 109 E-4 waiting for another sexy BoB paint scheme. Here is the build thread if anyone is interested: And a few photos: The decals were a mix of Xtradecal for the Balkenkreuzen and Swastikas, with Airfix for the stencils and unit markings. This is the 1/48 Eduard Spitfire Mk.I "Spitfire Story" edition built using the included PE and masks, with AML camouflage masks and Xtradecal RAF letters purchased to complete this kit. It's finished in standard Sovereign Colour Coats RAF colours, plus weathering using heavily thinned Humbrol enamels and Vallejo weathering pigments. This aircraft, L1065, was flown by Sgt Alan Feary of 609 Sqn, when he shot down one of the three Ju88s that had just bombed the airfield at Middle Wallop on 14th August 1940. Build thread is here. This is an Airfix Blenheim IV bomber, completed as T1826 "GB-B" of 105 Sqn, which flew five successful raids on the invasion barges as described in my build thread, and was flown by the inspirational Sqn Ldr Gordon Key throughout much of the Battle of Britain. To the standard kit I've added Quickboost exhausts and Eduard PE (interior and in the wheel bays), and I used Eduard canopy masks and AML camouflage masks. One of the machines equipped to carry bombs in the event that Mr Hitler made it across the channel. The model is made from plastic card for the most part. 0.5mm sheet for the fuselage and 2mm for the upper decking and wings.
