Hi folk's,I'm brush painting most kit's these days but still airbrush Humbrol matt coat for the final finish,I'm not happy with the finish these days(more like satin)

I'm mainly 1/72 modelling and I want to avoid the rattle can as it means outside spraying any suggestions for a good matt coat to either spray or better still brush

on where needed? I did try Vallejo and wasn't impressed.

I got mine from Hobbit Kraft a while back.

I've also seen it in the local type art shops.

I thin with W&N Flow Improver (Flow aid?). That last forever too. That needs mixing with distilled water. I make up 250ml batches.

I mainly AB it, but have on occasion hairy sticked the stuff.

It does take a while to completely dry, best left alone for a few days I find. It stays a little sticky.

Oh, and it's proper matt matt.

Their Satin is pretty nice too.

I have the gloss, but not really tried it.

I use the Flowimprover for most of my acrylics too, Tamiya, Vallejo, Revell etc...

Cleans the brushes too. I think it's just mainly detergent?

Concur with using Winsor & Newton "varnishes", their matt, satin and gloss meet all my needs. Haven't used the flow improver as it works just fine as it comes for me, predominantly applied via an airbrush.

The Flowimprover is just used as the thinner.

You premix it at 10%. ie 125ml will make 1.25ltrs.

Hence it last forever!

I've had that bottle years and use old Tamiya X-20a bottles to mix up 250ml batches.

This I then decant into Vallejo type dropper bottles for mixing in the AB cup, or mixing to raw acrylics on an old DVD for hairy stick work.

The varnish is a little weird. It looks really thick, bit I can put it through my Iwata 0.5mm CR un-thinned at 15-20PSI.

I do thin it slightly though, it just helps the flow.

Again, I've had that bottle years.

Ouch, it's gone up in price quite a bit from when I bought mine!

This is the stuff, I've checked the model number.

It's still worth it though. Cheaper than anything else I've found.

I find this stuff a little too matt for my liking. It struck me while reading this thread, perhaps thinning it 50/50 with Future would work. Anybody tried this?

I do the same as dromia.

Although I tend to use other gloss coats instead of the W&N.

The W&N Satin is a good compromise.

I have noted some modellers thin W&N with IPA. Maybe that has an affect on the sheen?

Not tried it myself as I find IPA dries acrylics too fast.
