1/18 th Hobby Boss: Fw 190 A8 "museum replica" : FINISHED !

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

After building the 1/18 th HB Me-262,I couldn't resist buying the Fw 190 kit too.

As with all my builds it will be out of box and my own paint scheme to represent a "museum replica".

HB also has the A5 kit. I went for the A8 simply because it was 8 Euro's cheaper. No idea why.

First progess.

The kit also has two bombs and mounts.

The wing is marked as part "Fw 190" Not A5 or A8.

So I might even add the bombs just to make it look more impressive.

Who cares if it's not correct ?

It's my model !

Absolutely! If you're happy with it, it's your hobby after all.

I was lucky enough to go to the musee de le Air at Le Bourget a year or so ago, (pardon my French!) and the FW-190 there looked, to me, like a big scale model.........  So, go with your interpretation!!  😀

Lovely kit, looking forward to watching it come together. I used to be quite the Luftwaffe enthusiast, these days I’m pretty diverse.

As far as I know. The luftwaffe employed rutstatze and umrutbausatze ( my spelling may not be correct) literally factory modifications and field modifications to fit the various bomb racks and rocket packs to the A series, which were later rationalised into the various F and G models hence you will see designations such as A-8/R1 or A-8/U1 etc, so this could be a valid configuration.

Indeed, the one at le Bourget is one of sixty-odd SNCAC NC900 delivered to the Armee de l’Air after liberation. GC III/5 Normandie-Niemen had about a dozen for a couple of years, and most of the rest were used for various purposes at the  Brétigny-sur-Orge flight testing facility.

Could it even fly? French labourers were notorious for subtly sabotaging German materiel.

Some painting.

All is done with Revell satin.

Nr 378 for the gray bits. The bombs and prop are black green.

I always like to add some bright colour to a Luftwaffe plane.

A yellow spinner and rudder.Later underside wing tips and maybe a yellow fuselage stripe or cowling.Still undecided.

I don't think I've ever seen a 1/18 kit before! Looks like a monster!

Like the Dauntless and Me 262 I've already build it's more about size than detail.

That didn't take long to do.

The main build is done.

Now I need to come up with a nice paint scheme.

Really great build. I think you meant conversion sets. German word for that is Rüstsatz ( singular ) and Rüstsätze ( plural ).

Yes, but they carried designations of U and R for factory conversions and field conversions. I must dig out my copy of Squadron Signal FW190 in action for the details.

Remember there were two blues RLM 65 and the later RLM 76 afair A-8 S would have been in production right to the end of the war so in picking your blue you’re dating your build. Unless of course you’re going to do a Homage rather than a specific scheme.

Ahh ok. So i think ,,U,, state for Umbausatz while the ,,R,, should state for Rüstsatz.

Just my opinion but im not sure.

I'm going with the RLM 65.

But this will be a "museum" finish. So the era doesn't realy matter that much.

Even the top camouflage will most likely be something not totally correct.

I already mixed one of the colours I shall use...sand.

But there is one problem to solve.

1: If the bombs were added in the field ,the mounts are placed over the crosses.

2: If the mounts were placed in the factory the crosses would most likely have been painted next to the mounts

But does that matter on a museum plane ? They would have repainted it .

So,IMO  option 2 is valid.

(between the mount and yellow wing tips as seen in the last picture)

What's your point of view ?
