1/35 IDF AMX-13 - old Heller kit with much added detail!

Recommended Posts

Finally completed this one. WIP can be found here:

I picked the old Heller kit up at a Euromilitaire show some years ago. I think I paid around £5. It's not a bad old kit but required some work, especially around the hull sides and turret areas, to get a half decent job. I'm especially pleased with the canvas area between the turret halves. This was made from milliput, and numerous small plastic fasteners using scrap card and minute bolt heads obtained from MAFVA.

Paint was mostly Vallejo, which was a first for me, and I was very pleased with the results. I picked up a tip from @CedB and used some W&N Acrylic flow improver, and it transformed these paints for me, as well as other Acrylics I use. Thanks Ced!

Washes, chips and general weathering was done with enamels and oils. The tracks are Takom, a track set bought especially for this project. Decals are a mixture of Heller and Takom (I have two Takom AMX-13's in the stash). The 7.62 MAG was from the Takom kit, but the support and brackets for this were scratch built.

I'm fairly pleased with the results as this is only my third 1/35 AFV built in the last couple of years, after a 40 year gap!. General shots first in the pictures below, followed by detail shots, and finally a couple with it's current shelf mate!

Comments and questions welcome.

For an old kit, you've made a damned fine job of it. Nice one Terry.

John.

Thanks John. The Takon ones will be the next AMX-13's (at some point), so an easier build perhaps!

Very nice build Terry, lovely weathering and finish

Thanks. It's the first time I've done such extensive weathering in this scale. I'll be trying it again on my next 1/35 build.

Thanks Ed.

It was a bit of a labour of love but worth it in the end.

Back when I was a small person I saw a picture of the AMX-13 and thought it was totally mad.  Tanks looked like Tigers or Shermans, Panzer IVs or T34s.  They didn't have the whole top of the turret tilt, or have canvas wrapped around them.  You have captured that madness the little boy perceived absolutely perfectly.

Thanks Dave, really appreciate that. I recall thinking on similar lines when I first became aware of the AMX-13 also at a young age. When I actually saw one for real, I couldn't get over how small it looked in comparison to other tanks at the time. The model looks smaller when compared to its stablemate the M41 on my display shelf, and the M41 as we know is not a large tank by any means!

Thanks again each
