Phoenix - ex Amerigo Vespucci 1/84 - Panart- by Kevin

Recommended Posts

good morning everyone

although it has been quiet on my AV build, i did create the display area

Display case for my large scale builds - Work in Progress - Maritime - Britmodeller.com

but i have been learning new skills as well

taught myself rope making using the   @Alexey Domanoff rope maker and have now started to get some nice results, using Guttermans Mara threads and serpia ink

im using 4 sizes of thread 30, 70, 100, and 120 ( 30 is the largest i have)

good evening everyone

i continue to work on this beast, often going backwards, but getting there

all blocks that attach to pintles or none rope tend to have round collets, i have tried to replicate this using and alternative evergreen tube

at this stage she was put away for a month or so whilst i did another project which has since gone on hols again in an attempt to complete the running rigging  by Christmas this yearIMG_0656.thumb.JPG.287429d75be1fb5765026IMG_0657.thumb.JPG.a8d9a5dff1271c82795c7

good evening, everyone

it was about 10 days ago lying-in bed 3 in the morning, wife breathing heavy one side and the Boi spaniel in his bed right next to me and all i could do was think about model building,

the sd14 is enjoyable but 100 days on im slightly ready for a change, I have other kits new and some started but i want the WOW factor, something to get me head thinking, something to tax me without being boring, and a little out of my comfort zone,

thinking we are on an adventure my boi follows me  into my display area and discuss what to do next, well I talk to myself whilst the boi looks for treats in me pockets

a process of elimination rules out any new build 1/200 Titanic and Shipways Syren being started as the new INDY is out later this year

Next the started builds, 1/48 Enterprise is crossed off as is the U Boat and Snowberry.

We have one build left the Amerigo, this is the build that should have gone to landfill many years ago, its only when I restarted her that I decided to make her in my own version

Anyway she came back to the table, and im pleased with the progress my WOW and out of comfort zones will be coming in the form of putting a full set of sails on her

Good morning everyone

the SD14 is still in the mancave, mainly she is to big to put anywhere at present, she will fit in the display cabinet, but getting her in there is the problem

the decission to put sails onto the AV is a big game changer for me, i always wanted a fully fitted build but wanted it to be a clipper, i ruled out the Amerigo Vespucci as i didnt want to offend the AV followers, that went out of the window when i painted her green,

main mast lower shrouds fitted

followed by the backstays

every 5th line of the ratlines is a metal bar

i did the first set of lines incorrect so this is how i do them the right way

Gidday Kevin, the knot you've used for the ratlines looks like a clove-hitch. Impressive job on the rigging so far. Regards, Jeff.

and thank you

good evening everyone

more progress has been made on the build, and she has now changed her name from Amerigo to Phoenix, as she bears little resemblance to the real thing and absolutely noting like the kit intended, i have never had such a kit so wrong in every detail,

anyway her a e a few photos taken since the last update

mizzen mast is nearly complete with its own UFO launch pad, and lot more ratlines have been added,

  • Kevin Aris changed the title to Phoenix - ex Amerigo Vespucci 1/84 - Panart- by Kevin

What an amazing thread Kevin, especially when the starting point is taken into consideration. I bet you are glad it did not end up as land-fill fodder.

Thanks too for showing the knotting sequence for the ratlines!

All the best,

Ray
