1/48 AW101 330 Sqn RNoAF Search & Rescue

Conversion from the Airfix 1/48 HC3

Ok this is a big project, converting the Airfix 1/48 Agusta Westland AW101 Merlin to the new Norweiian Air Force Search & Rescue Helicopter.

This is the inspiration:

And this is how I'm starting, move all the windows around and blank off lumps and bumps....followed by adding more in different places.

One of my favourite schemes and one I have been thinking about for my Italeri 72th scale one, but I wish Italeri had done the fuselage sides that niceley.

The work you have already performed is stunning.

Hi there

Do you have a cunning plan for the special nose an Norwegian markings?

BTW, I will be following this with interest.

regards Toby

Yes, hopefully Simone will come good on his 3d printed nose cone and other AW101 bits!

Decals wise I'm using bits from both the 1/72 & 1/48 Vingtor sets....

If you need some detailed info on these aircraft, I might be able to help a bit... ;)

I'm never going to turn down an offer like that! Want a list !!

Great progress! Wish Nils would make decals in 1/48😃 Where can one buy Simone`s stuff?

Cheers from Norway!

Xtradecal do them in 1/72 but it's such a big conversion I'm not sure what the demand would be like. Whirlybird asked if I'd be interested in making my work into a conversion kit, but the way I build would effectively mean destroying my model to cast bits of it. And it would be a huge kit to create...bigger than the belcher bits C149 conversion.

I am definitely thinking about 1/72 scale. Not sure about the sales potential for 1/48.

There should be more colour schemes for the AW101-612 soon too...

I'd have one of these in 1/48, it'd look great next to my Lynx!

Xtradecal already do these in 1/72, but very basic stuff

Decals wise the biggest challenge is the Norwegian SAR crest and the Norwegian Shield (handed)

Being basic is one thing. Accuracy is another issue. That's why I would like to do a set.

Will follow this with interest like @perdu as I have a 1/72 Merlin put aside for this scheme along with a Sea King and Whirlybird update set, for Norwegian service. I have some good shots of a Norwegian AW101 from Farnborough back in 2018. I'll dig them out.

The Norwegian interested is encouraged by my wife, who has much Norwegian blood!

Terry

PS. Just noticed your earlier photo was probably from the same Farnborough show as I can see the Portland based training Seaking in the background!

Is Simone also printing you a new tail rotor hub to replace the old one from the kit?

Not that I'm aware of, he's said he will be doing nose cones, winches, external search light and radar fairings...

How do I tag him on here?
