Coming along in leaps and bounds. Good luck with all that is going on in your life at the moment.

Thanks a lot Jabba!

It's worrying to see how many people have lost their jobs due to COVID-19 over the last couple of months. Personally I'm thinking it might be a good time for a career change to another business than aviation, looking at how political incorrect it has become to take an airplane these days. We shall see what the future holds, something good I'm sure 🙂

Primer on!

Have to say that the Vallejo Mecha black primer went on very well without the slightest of issues. Will allow it to dry for 24 hours, before hopefully applying the first layer of Vallejo 71.018 black green tomorrow evening.

The canopy comes as two parts, with the provisioning of showing the model with the rear cockpit access on the right side as either open or closed. Fitting it in the closed position gave me some issues, as the fit was rather bad. Tried to fill the gaps with some filler and white glue. Not a pretty sight, so expect to see only pictures of the left side in the gallery 😉

Thanks for watching!

Thanks for the tip on the paint Tim, your Apache is looking really good!

As I can't get Hataka or Testors Helo Drab around here, I had to settle with Vallejo, Tamiya, Mr Hobby or AMMO MIG paints, which are all available from the two hobby stores we have here in Dubai. So my first attempt will be the Vallejo black green, hoping it will turn out ok. It doesn't have to be a perfect color match anyway, as long as it is not to far off how an Apache could look in real life.

The canopy on the Hasegawa kit really deserves an upgrade, as it is really dull. So no reason to spend to much on the cockpit interior, which I just painted all black.

Will be interesting to compare the Hataka Army Helo Drab with the Vallejo Dark Green. To be continued ...

Afternoon all,

Yesterday I managed to apply the first coat of paint to the Apache. Settled on the Vallejo 71.018 Black Green and to be honest I'm quite pleased with this color. It's interesting how the color will change, depending on the light you see it in.

A nice shade of Green.

Thank you gents!

Went to the local hobby store yesterday to top up on AMMO MIg weathering products before leaving Dubai. Think it will be difficult to find a good old fashioned hobby store in Germany these days! Going to miss my local store here in Dubai 😪

This build will be my first attempt on any weathering, so I'll be coming back for some advise on how to go about that from you guys later.

Still only managed to apply the first coat of green, but everything is set for a second and hopefully last coat tomorrow morning, when the day light breaks.

Next will be a clear coat before applying the transfers. I have the following gloss/clear products at my availability, any advise on what to use and how to apply by airbrush please?

- Vallejo 26.701 gloss varnish

- Tamiya X-22 clear

- Revell 36101 clear, gloss

Apologies for the "novice" questions and thanks in advance for any help!

I'll be starting an Italeri 1/72 Apache in this GB, this weekend  -  to run in parallel with my Vietnam GB Cobra.

As for this Hasegawa kit, I built a Hasegawa AH-64A Apache prototype  in 1989, - but the kit goes back  to 1983!

As for paints, I bought Humbrol 66 Olive Drab for the Cobra,  and Humbrol 244 as a black-green for the Apache.

We'll see how they work out shortly thereafter.

Tell me about the kit going back to 1983, I literally spend hours on cleaning parts before assembly!

I'll be following both your Cobra and Apache builds, sadly I will likely not have the possibility to build anything for the Vietnam GB myself.

Humbrol 244 should also be a good color choice for the Apache, I think.

Apologies for being absent from this fantastic GB for some time now, but I have had to spend all my resources on preparing the big move from Dubai.

The household, motorcycle and classic car has now been packed in a 40’ container, with some luck we’ll see it all again in Germany in 6-8 weeks time.

The Apache is actually in it’s final stages with mostly decalling and some weathering remaining. I’m hopeful I can manage to finish it within the GB deadline, as I‘m going to hand carry the kit and some basic tools with me to Germany.

👍 to everyone who have posted in the gallery so far!

Good luck with the move from me too and I hope you get your modelling essentials through airport security OK ;)

Thank you CliffB! Though a 6 hours flight would be a good opportunity to apply some decals, I think airport security would appreciate if I placed the modelling essentials in the checked in bagage 😉

Good luck with the move - hopefully the stress factor will stay low and everyone will do what they are supposed to. 😀

Thank you Jinxman, so far all has gone smooth!

This is how the living room and hobby room looked like on the day of packing. Just hoping the stash will survive 🙂

Evening all,

Apologies for the lack of updates, but luckily the Apache arrived safely together with me and the family here in Germany.

c05eaf4df593c6fd5723c60aa3b94fea.jpg

While there hasn’t been much time for modelling so far, I’m hoping to catch up and finish this build before the deadline in a couple of weeks’ time. Next up will be a clear coat before applying the decals and a bit of paintwork on the gears and tail rotor. Not much really, just need to find the time to do it.

Time permitting, I was planning to give her some post weathering. As this would be my first attempt with washes and the likes, I was hoping to get some advice from you guys having experience on weathering.

I have a black wash from Vallejo and the following AMMO mig products to my avail, which in some combination might work on a black green Apache:

- 1506 brown for dark green filter

- 1507 tan for yellow filter

- 1508 green for grey green filter

- 1510 tan for 3 tone camo filter

- 1601 medium grey PLW

- 1602 deep grey PLW

- 1608 dark green grey PLW

- 1612 green brown PLW

If needed, I will source some oils from a local Arts & Crafts store (as stupidly all of my newly purchased AMMO mig Oilbrusher’s were packed in the container).

Would a weathering sequence like the below make sense, or am I over complicating it?

- apply a matt or satin varnish after decaling

- apply selected filters in thin layers

- apply Panel Line Wash as required

- apply oils as required (oil dot technique?)

- apply a final layer of matt or satin varnish

Should I possible apply some matt or satin coats of varnish in between the above steps, to “seal” off the work, before going to the next step?

I’m looking for a "medium" weathered end result, something in the lines of this UAE Apache seen on the 2019 Dubai Air Show.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated (and yes I know, it’s all about practise 😉).

Cheers

Johnny b

Can't help with the washes - other than I always try to put a  'barrier' between weathering coats - I use Pledge/Klear.  She looks like she is almost there - good luck with her. 😀
