Hurricane Trio - Arma and Airfix 1/72

mmm.... I don't think it's overproduction - rather smart salesmanship.

They know they have a good kit, and the boxed versions ship with multiple options in decals (especially the Expert sets)

So they can still sell their runs, but don't need to do 100% of the boxes, manuals & stuff ánd have happy customers at the same time!

Thanks alt - makes sense! :)

No.  it's meant to curve.   The cockpit side wall is curved plywood.

Note the cockpit fitting are attached from the outside, screwed or bolted through the ply, as can be seen here

[snip pic]

If you zoom the pic, the detail are very clear, visble screw heads etc.

To the left of the dogs neck a small fabric patch can be seen, with 'pinked' edges

The machine sporting this is YB-F of 17 Sq, July 1940

a rare P**** series Hurricane built with fabric wings,

3 other pics are here

https://www.flickr.com/photos/144949377@N05/albums/72157678154026658/with/46178589494/

There are 3 possible serials that are fabric winged and were at 17 Sq.

Thanks Troy - yes, that helps a lot. Now bent (see below) :)

Hello Ced,

Old fashioned modeller... What should I add...

Thanks CC - that explains it! :D

They're looking great Ced, and it's a very useful comparison between the kits.

Glad your thumb is healing so quickly. I did nearly the same thing a few weeks ago opening a package, and globbed some superglue onto the cut - it worked! (Also managed to spill some on my model and didn't notice til it had set, d'oh!)

Thanks Cookie :)

I've tried the superglue too in the past and my brand didn't even sting!

More tiny PE this morning.

This interested me - the panel here has to have the end gauges bent upwards. How do they do that? A couple of tiny holes in the PE allows you to 'break the top off':

50074815212_9e66c189e9_z.jpg

Can you see the holes? Oh well, I tried :D

You can definitely see the result here:

50073995703_0642ef8f6a_z.jpg

Side panel bent in (thanks Troy):

50074817197_97ac98e2fa_z.jpg

…and panels fitted:

50074593711_961933a700_z.jpg

I've bent the gauges up a bit now.

Yes, I did knock the throttle lever off, now glued back on.

Note the little lever in the middle, currently unpainted. This goes on top of, er, a little lever?

I can't see a double lever in reference shots so I guess the plastic one should be cut off.

Or the PE one ignored.

I'm a bit embarrassed to show this:

50074854667_fdcb0380d7_z.jpg

The narrowest bit on my cheap(ish) PE tool is too wide for the map case. Rats.

I used tweezers to hold it on the tool and bend the other edges

This does get a bit silly with the 'envelope':

50074868832_0a5980d4b3_z.jpg

Tiny.

It's on now:

I need a lie down…

True, but it's turning out great

Great work with those miniscule PE parts Ced. I must confess that I suffered a heavy defeat at their hands on my build and consigned them to recycling bin. Always thought in the right hands they could give a spectacular result. ;)

I know Keith, I'm having to be very careful to point something at the PE once cut so that, when I take my eyes away from it to charge the GG Thin brush, I can find the bloomin' thing again! :)

I think that's probably wise. I bet none of it will be visible after close up, let alone when it's on the ceiling!

I did think about having this one wheels down and in the cabinet, but I've promised Troy the wheels… I can always buy another I suppose.

Addiction? What me?

Fiddly part 1:

Part 2:

50082832732_735c85bddd_z.jpg

Now then, have a look at the pedals, bottom left.

Where are you supposed to cut the plastic?

I decided on here:

50082599256_befc72928c_z.jpg

Hmmm.

Too tired for anything else this morning.

I stayed up to late binge watching 'Hunters' on Prime. Tense.

That was after Mrs B's birthday celebrations yesterday.

We'd invited the girls down for lunch.

Our garden table had gone rotten so more was ordered. Has to be big enough for 2m distancing!!!

All assembled and ready, thumb injuries aside.

Was it nice and sunny?

No.

Average wind speed in the 20s with gusts forecast up to 40mph.

Mrs B bought in some food after we cancelled the table we had at a local hotel - not happy with the internal distancing.

Do you know how far a plastic container of couscous can blow?

How about Strawberries?

All I can say is it's impressive… and messy!

Social gathering within 1 metre plus is permitted after July 4.

Yes I know that far too close for upwind couscous but that's the cut of its jib again.

It used to be that government advice could be understood, nowadays it only needs to be 'out here'

Confused?

Oh yes!

Tricky Bill isn't it? I'm staying safe - I don't think the virus can read the current guidance and it's still about :(

Very nice Ced! When you finish all that PE watchmakingey stuff I seem to remember you had a Hurricane kit (or three) to build?

Hurricane kits? What Hurricane kits? :D

I'm hoping to get the magnifiers off soon… please, soon.

Yes, very funny (if you weren't there). Mrs B looked at the weather and said "We can dress up warm - It'll be just like camping!"

I hate camping.

Faced with this this morning:

50085507363_c780262a2c_z.jpg

I touched up the PE and knocked off the lever on the lever - threw it in the bin and painted the plastic.

Applied Contacta to the seat and positioned it.

Knocked off the PE adjuster handle.

Couldn't fit the 'V' frame and the i/p neatly.

Practiced my Anglo-Saxon a bit.

I'm all fingers and thumbs this morning so I think I'd better leave well alone…

I can understand your feelings. I wonder sometimes if kit manufacturers sometimes push the envelope too far with adding such microscopic detail where it’ll never be seen again. I get the idea of enjoying the process of building, but sometimes less is definitely more, especially at scales smaller than 1/48th.

Having just about completely lost the mythical mojo since finishing the Roden T-28, I looked at the pile of started kits' sitting on the 'shelf of one day' for something simple to get on with & picked up the Eduard 72nd duo pack of Spit XVI's. Opened the box & immediately thought 'that was a mistake' as I'd forgotten about all the flippin p.e. in there. But looking at the destructions I realised you have to cut plastic bits off to use the stuff, so I did the same & painted the plastic...!!

Hope you get your fingers and thumbs untangled soon Ced!

Yep, throwing the PE in the bin and painting the plastic was my experience too. I committed the folly of trying to fit the Arma hurricane undercarriage legs in the same way as the Airfix kit. It didn't work out very well but then I am a clumsy d fool.

Would love to see a shot of your ceiling Ced, it sounds very old school!

Sorry Ced I had to chuckle at the upwind Cous Cous. 🤣 it was my old dears 80th on Saturday and we actually got to see each other. Back garden BBQ set up by my brother. There was a lot of gusty food that afternoon. 🤣😂 luckily the rain stayed off.  The Hurri’s look great, all that tiny detail can be a pain but it’ll be worth it. Top stuff dear boy. 🥳

Johnny.

ps. Belated happy birthday to Mrs B.

Hello Ced

Magnifiers are very usefull and this will became addictive !!

Oh so you also tried something like the BBQ in a gale ??

Flying couscous ?? The whole bowl or all the grains ??? Bit by bits ? Blowed by the wind it can be pushed in some... Let's say disturbing places...

I hate camping too... Winds, rain, snoring in the tent just 1 meter aside, and some other disturbing noises...

The only times I practised camping was on airshow, behind the hangars and totally made off from foreign beverages testings

Now you know why I do prefer making 1/48 kits...

And even in that scale, I'm swearing a lot...

Practising some foreign languages.... I('s more funny...

And SWMBO did'nt understand....

Give it a try !!

Sincerely.

CC

I'm sure Procopious fitted the undercarriage on his after assembling the wings and did a video, but I can't find it now :(

Pictures of the ceiling? Pretty hard to take but here's a taste:

CC you crack me up!

I have some 1/48 kits in the stash so try it I will!

I thought I shouldn't let the 'Expert' internals beat me so I tried just fitting the i/p:

50090686481_db65a278c3_z.jpg

It beat me.

See how it's fouling on the frame on the left?

There's a gap in the seam too.

Dry fit, sand, repeat in my future…
