Hurricane MK.1, 17 Squadron, June 1940

Recommended Posts

Hello all,

Here is my recently completed Airfix 1/48 Hurricane MK.1, marked as N2359 of 17 Squadron, based at Debden in June 1940. Built as part of my 'RAF QRA through the years' project, the build can be viewed on page9 here

Extras used included Sky decals, Eduard canopy mask, AML camouflage mask and a CMK resin seat. Paints are from MRP and the weathering was done with a mixture of Abteilung oils, AK pencils and Tamiya pigments.

This is my first Hurricane in over 16 years of modelling. Quite happy with how  it turned out.

Lovely Hurricane indeed....however the spinner on N2359 as with the spinners on 17 Squadrons  other Hurricanes was painted in the under surface colour  of whatever Pale Blue/Sky was available and not Yellow. It would seem that the erroneous colour for the spinner dates back to the mid 70`s profiles in magazines. I doubt that any Hurricane or Spitfire in 1940 would have a Yellow spinner for fear of being mistaken for a Bf109E .

1 hour ago, one of the few said:

The use of yellow by the Luftwaffe occurred later on in the battle, as a quick identity marking. And, by then word had come down that spinner were to be Night.

But,

85 Squadron were using flight coloured spinners in May and July 1940,   in particular the Life magazine July 1940 photos taken at Debden and Castle Camps (which they shared with 17 Sq)

The C/O plane, S/Ldr Peter Townsend's P3166 VY-Q has a white spinner,

and from looking at tonal values, there are spinners in yellow, compare prop tips to spinner

red, (look at fin flash) VY-K, note also the 17 Sq Hurricanes in the background, background left, yellow spinner, background right, red or blue.

including the very famous, and oft misrepresented VY-R,  red with white striping., compare to gun ports

17 Sq

YB-F,  gloss spinner,  maybe blue (look at wing roundels) maybe red, not the underside colour as that is visible.

Also with a fabric wing!  Most like one of the rare P**** serials built with fabric wings.

Well finished model @DaveJL   :goodjob:

I'm not going to go anorak on this, as it done, but  if you can, touch in the fin leading edge red and white, as the wrap around.

You might also want to add some oil streaks, as can be seen in the pics above, Merlins leaked a lot of oil.

in the case of the Hurricane, this makes a very distintive stain  on the UC doors, this is why

hurr1-10.jpg

it leaks, is blown back by the airstream, and the goes over the doors,  not obvious until you see the above.... now look at the other photos above and you can see why and how they marks happen ;)
