T.C's Chopper in 1/72 - DONE

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

It seems like every TV show or film in the 70s & 80s that I watched had a helicopter of some kind in it. And with being lucky enough to fly as a kid in a helicopter with my Dad, I'm a bit of a rotor nut. Or rotor head nut....So when this GB came up, I was most definitely in with one build and all going well, hopefully another.

Like @Jinxman, I'm also in with an AH-6 but from Italeri and to be built as a civilian model...

I've built some small helicopters but this one is a first for me.

Thanks for looking and enjoy your builds!

All the best,

This really is a fantastic choice Dermot, both for the type of helicopter (love the Hughes 500 family) and for the fact that you're building it as T.C.'s chopper from Magnum! I loved that programme and was always really pleased when the Hughes had a part in one of the episodes.

The kit is a nice one too, I built one years ago as a JMSDF example and really enjoyed it. it is tiny though in 1/72!

This looks good - and it would be great with an accompanying figure of Magnum climbing in, in one of those lovely flowery shirts he wore - just saying....😀

So small bit started on this tiny chopper..

Quick shot of primer..

Then started painting. From watching some episodes, looks like the interior is a kind of beige/light tan. I also added a bench seat in the back from plasticard.

I think TC only flew it from the left seat so didn't add any controls for the right hand side

Some time spent masking up...I love building helicopters! LOL

Then off to the paint booth. I'm going to leave the pilot door open.

Blimey, that's bright. Tamiya Fine surface primer from a rattlecan. Apparently it's great for the yellow to follow.

Thanks all and finally on to paint!

First, the yellow.

Then the orange..

And finally getting ready for the brown..

Removing the masking shows some areas needing a touch up but happy enough with it!

And into the home stretch with this one!

For some reason, part of the tail section disintegrated when I tried to glue the tail rotor assembly to it...turned to rubber 🙄 I don't know if I put too much glue (Tamiya Extra thin) on it.

After a bit of head-scratching (and some choice language), I cut off a little more of the tail and added a similar length of sprue from the kit itself. For more strength, I drilled a hole in each part and 'pinned' it with some wire.

And started blending in with filler..

Quite happy how that's turned out! I also added some foot steps to the front legs from sprue.

Will paint, re-varnish and crack on with the final bits.

Thanks for looking and all the comments.

All the best,

Dermot

Looking good, pity about the mishap with the tail boom, you seem to be on top of it though. I did some flying in 500s while doing supply lifts with the local ski club aeons ago, I should track down the rego & do one as an aircraft I flew in, thanks for the inspiration. :)

Thanks everyone, much appreciated!

Unfortunately, the main rotors had the same melting-plastic experience as the tail boom....really weird.

So out with a drill and some fuse wire - I drilled a hole in each blade root and another in the main hub

Result is a little wonky in places (might affect the rotor head balance 🙄) but at least all are attached and relatively ok-looking.

Much happier how the tail repair turned out. Will add the last bits tonight, find my Hawaiian shirt and post some pics.
