Corsairfoxfouruncle Posted June 22, 2020 Posted June 22, 2020 Hello everyone... With my -4 build sidelined for now and with me getting some father's day money yesterday I picked up a Tamiya Birdcage in 1/72 scale. Silly me thought Tamiya included a radome to turn these into a -2 night-fighter in the kit like the 1/48 versions. So unless I can find the out of production quick-boost part 72-119 this will be a standard -1 probably another Blacksheep bird as Ive already built Walsh's bird. I will have to dig through and see what birdcage’s fall free from my files. Any ideas or thoughts are welcomed Dennis 4
modelling minion Posted June 22, 2020 Posted June 22, 2020 There's no stopping you is there Dennis! I'm sure that you will find some suitably interesting decals for her. 1

dogsbody Posted June 22, 2020 Posted June 22, 2020 Looks like you're S.O.L. as getting the radome directly from Quickboost. Good luck in your hunt. Chris 1
dogsbody Posted June 22, 2020 Posted June 22, 2020 Hey! Would the radome from an Eduard Hellcat fit the Corsair wing? I've got the Hellcat Mk.I/Mk.II Dual Combo kit and I don't plan to build a nightfighter out of either one. If it's workable, I'll remove one and send it down to you. Chris
Corsairfoxfouruncle Posted June 22, 2020 Author Posted June 22, 2020 (edited) The Vought one is distinctively egg shaped so not sure. http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-t1Tez82IS5s/UdCcbol6lTI/AAAAAAAAFi4/iPphDFlvyeI/s1600/F4U-2+Radome+Montage.jpg If it does Id love to take it ? Tailspin Turtle Posted June 23, 2020 Posted June 23, 2020 There's some information on the F4U-2 and the Tamiya kit here: https://tailhooktopics.blogspot.com/2013/06/f4u-2-antennas-and-other-stuff.html 1 1
dogsbody Posted June 23, 2020 Posted June 23, 2020 I don't think it will work. The Hellcat radome is more below the wing than fitted evenly above and below. Chris 1
Corsairfoxfouruncle Posted June 25, 2020 Author Posted June 25, 2020 Hello everyone... I got the kit in the post today so I figured id post up the sprue shots. My dream would be to fo this as a -2 night fighter but unless I can get a radome that just isn't happening. So Im posting this question and photo’s looking for ideas. I could do a stateside training scheme like one of these ? the top profile. That or build another SWPA theatre used two or 3/4 tone birdcage ? The profile is just an example as I don't have specific decals for that plane. Please feel free to suggest ideas for either a radome or schemes. Ive checked the hellcat radome and it is the correct diameter but its mount to the corsair wing is different than Grumman's hellcat radome. Dennis 2
modelling minion Posted June 25, 2020 Posted June 25, 2020 Some interesting choices there Dennis. Another aircraft from the SWPA would be great but I also like the overall GSB training aircraft, it's not a version you normally see in that scheme. 1
Corsairfoxfouruncle Posted June 28, 2020 Author Posted June 28, 2020 Morning everyone... Primary goal on this is to hopefully still find a radome and build a -2. However thats not very likely so Ive been digging and digging trying to find an interesting plane to build, and tonight I think I have. While digging through the azizbiz page for VMF-214 the Blacksheep I found a rather uniquely marked birdcage Corsair “White 14” A slightly better photo. I think the unique white markings under the wings and on the cowling are a good eye catcher this is the early two-tone Non spec Blue-grey over non-spec light grey Please feel free to ask questions, post comments, and or add thoughts. modelling minion Posted June 28, 2020 Posted June 28, 2020 Nice find Dennis, I do like that earlier scheme and the white stripes make it different. Is it me or are the outer folding parts of the under wings in a different darker colour than the inner section and area under the fuselage? 1

They are its similar to the 3/4 tone camo, in that the outer lower wing panels carry the upper color. Well at least according to multiple photo’s and placement guides, schematics, and drawings. When I was younger I didn't paint them that way, as its counterintuitive to paint the upper color on the lower wing. But its a navy thing as the wings fold up vertically on these. They would be visible as an upper surface. 2
almac Posted June 29, 2020 Posted June 29, 2020 Dennis, the Italeri F4u kit has a radome which I’m sure would fit the Tamiya kit. This has been in my spares box for years it’s yours if you want it. Cheers Allan 4

Corsairfoxfouruncle Posted June 29, 2020 Author Posted June 29, 2020 Evening everyone... Been studying the photo and I think the white strip carries over to the top of the wing. I also see no evidence of the outlying white stripes that shows up in some decal guide’s and photo’s. They are the little white lines by the wing stars & bars as seen here on white 740’s wings. I wont be adding them but will be doing the extra two national insignias just like the photo up top shows. please feel free to ask questions, post comments, and or add thoughts. Dennis 3
modelling minion Posted June 30, 2020 Posted June 30, 2020 I would agree, bigger white stripe that wraps over the top of the wing too but no small white stripes. That bottom picture is interesting as it shows a mix in national markings under the wings, presumably on the top surfaces too? Would make for an interesting model. 2

They were the “Swashbuckler’s” and this very well could be one of those 214 Corsairs. They finished the tour and were rotated back to the states. Boyington was then given command of the unit with new or second tour pilots. https://www.3rdmaw.marines.mil/Units/MAG-13/VMA-214/History/ I may do the six position Roundels. Or maybe the six with some of them getting just white bars. With another one or two possibly getting the full star & bar with red surround. Be a real mix-up but would give it some visual interest. This sounds great to me Dennis, I love the idea of the markings in transition. 1
Corsairfoxfouruncle Posted July 9, 2020 Author Posted July 9, 2020 Hello everyone... I will get to this in a few days. Ive decided to take a day or three off. Ive done 21 builds so far this year and I need a break. Please feel free to ask questions, post comments, and or add thoughts ? Dennis 3
modelling minion Posted July 9, 2020 Posted July 9, 2020 My only question would be how on Earth you managed to build 21 models so far this year! 2 1

In the famous words “AHHHM DA MODEL TERRRRMINAAATOR” ... Its actually a bit of a nightmare Craig. I switched to 1/72 because I was running out of storage space. But i can build more models and faster in 1/72. so I'm actually running out of space faster now than if id stuck with 1/48. And in case your curious heres the list. The scary thing is I've got about 10-15 scheduled for the rest of the year. 3 minutes ago, dogsbody said: My guess is he's got a bunch of his own minions locked in his basement, building the damned things for him. It really boils down to the fact that Im disabled, and its either build models or stare at the flat screen all day ? Ive seen thousands of movies and T.V. shows, and I'm really sick of doing that 18 hours a day. Besides SWMBO encourages me to do this as it give her time without me pestering her. Dennis 1 2
