Lockheed U-2C NASA #708 - Testors 1/48

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I'm assembling this old testor kit:

to make this Nasa airplane:

Origin:  www.aviationphotocompany.com

This U-2 aircraft, NASA 708, with its sister ship, NASA 709, was obtained from the U.S. Air Force in 1971 to test instrumentation systems being developed for the early Landsat Earth-observing satellites. The results were so successful that the program was extended, with the aircraft becoming significant Earth-observing platforms in their own right. Because they were capable of gathering air samples at altitudes above 95 percent of the Earth's atmosphere, they also became instrumental in studying atmospheric composition. These data made significant contributions to early ozone studies.

As usual a quick look inside the box

This mold, from the mid 60s, is really starting to show it's age, for example the amount of flash and warping found in the wing halves was considerably higher.

I decided to remove the raised panel and reinscribe before assembly the main body and the wings.

NICE! I built this years ago but with the Hawk boxing as an A. I did Testors later and

used a cockpit from an old 1/48 Revell F-104 for it. The U-2 was developed from the Lockheed

F-104. Will be watching with interest.---John

Very nice, and one of a handful of favourites—the kit and the U-2.  I built one a few years back but lost most of the photos when Photbucket started playing games There are a few left starting on #104.  Rescribed it as you have done and same colour scheme.  I have another “C” and would do it all again if I didn’t have so much on my plate.  Following with interest.

Cheers

I have restarted this old project that had been parked in the hangar "failed items"...

Unfortunately the disastrous attempt to repaint the model and the lack of suitable decals (I managed to find only the caracal Models, usable only for the U-2R model ..) forced me to convert the plane to the one used by the CIA (all Black and without any insignia) and here is the result ... still missing some details like the "Pogos" ...

A pity that they didn’t cooperate, still the full black version looks very nice 👍

Good save Fixer😉

Must say that I like the Hawk/Testors U2 more then the AFV kit as the former though older are better in general outlines then the AFV kit!

Also a lot of detail is wrong, though highly detailed.

I have them all, the AFV U2C kit the Testors U2C and even the Hawk U2A version.

Planning to merge some AFV parts of it in the Hawk kit in the near future !

Cheers, Jan
