Eastern Front Fw190's

Recommended Posts

Underside masked and Tamiya XF52 Flat Dark Earth sprayed for the Tan colour, the instructions show a much lighter shade but I checked several paint conversion charts and compared XF52 with Mr Colour H310 and they match very well.

After this had dried overnight the tan was masked of using Humbrol Maskol

I have found Maskol better than tape for these small irregular patches and then sprayed Mr colour H303

Hopefully tonight I can get the green masked and spray the H65.

Masked up the green ready for the Mr Colour H65 RLM70 Black Green, This took nearly 2 hours with the Maskol but I don't think it would have been possible with tape.

And then on with the Black Green

The unmasking took just 30 mins resulting in this

  • 5 weeks later...

Been away with work but I'm back home and continued with option A, I sprayed the normal Future floor polish and Mr Colour leveling thinners but somehow ended up with a finger print in the yellow fuselage band.

I can only think that when I preped the airbush I got some cleaner on my finger before I picked up the model, so some masking and 2 plastic bags later I resprayed the band only to find the painted did not match.

After remasking and 2nd respray of yellow band.

I let this harden for a few days and carry on with decals.

I'm sorry I missed this until now!  I recently went on a Fw-190 binge, converting an Airfix A-8 to an F-8 and building a Hobby Boss A-6, which took extensive modification to make it a true A-6.  I just received this same Grunherz kit about a week ago, which I bought specifically for the Emil Lang paint scheme.  The A-8 I'm going to paint in a late war scheme matching one captured in Denmark at the end of the war.

I love what you've done with these!  They're beautiful!  I am very impressed with the Emil Lang camo.  I never thought to use liquid mask for camouflage before. I've seen a lot of different interpretations of this paint scheme -- have you ever found any photos of it (I haven't).

Is it me, or are these Eduard kits with the multiple bodies and wings the ultimate tease?  I confess I haven't looked at the plastic in this kit yet so I didn't realize there are 4 bodies.  I already went down the overtrees route for a weekend edition I bought, but they are very expensive here.  Part of me thinks I should let it go, but another part of me thinks I could do an A3 at least...

Anyway... following with interest.  I really love what you've done so far!

Thanks, the Eduard kits are probably the best Fw190 in 1/72 just hope they do the rumoured Bf109's in 1/72. Unfortunately the small parts overtrees aren't avalible on the eduard website atm I could've have sent some out. I've used the maskol a couple of times now instead of tape or blue tack just depends if you after hard or soft edges.

Apparently you can order the over trees from Eduard directly  to make up the missing bits.  actually I think @neil5208 mentioned it in his first post.

Dies seem odd that they would do that as they are effectively undercutting themselves.

I must admit I love the three colour camo so unusual and very well executed.

I know that you can order from Eduard directly, but it's $25 shipping for an $8 item, so that is prohibitively expensive.  Sprue Brothers sold them for $8 and shipping was more like 10$, but I can get some supplies I need anyway as they combine shipping, so it's a much better deal... except... they are out of stock. :(  Oh well.

eBay maybe ?

I found some on ebay from Victory models.  Still kind of stiff, but not nearly as bad.  I think total with shipping was $18.  Which is about the price of a new Eduard kit (well, a little less), but then I'd have an extra set of wings and body, and I'd have to find some overtrees and .... oh wait.... :frantic:

Started the main decals and then realised I hadn't sprayed the exhaust panels so I did this before doing the stencils.

This set of decals is a little out of register compared to previous sets of eduard decals.

I haven't completely forgotten this one but it did get shuffled down the build drawers a few places but I going to try and finish in the next few days. It been flat coated and some exhaust staining applied with MIG powders. I have sprayed the undercarriage so that's almost ready to fit and that will be the last bits done.
