Now the Harrier's are complete the next kit out of the stash is Eduards Fw190 Grunherz dual boxing. Another of Eduard dual combo kits with sprues to build 2 complete aircraft, but it not...

36b62392-919f-4f08-9600-082b32cbce46.JPG

The box has 2 of what Eduard call small parts trees, all the common parts needed for all variants from A3 up to A8, there is an additional sprue for the F series which is mostly weapons.

dd51e208-ff14-4c03-80c0-47eb03348f8f.JPG

and 2 canopy trees, again cover all Fw190 variants A3 to F8

but has 4 main trees, one each of sprue C, G H and J.

fd3c7727-71ec-45c9-ab0b-899b48d55c5d.JPG

each one slightly different so you can build the Fw190 A5 light wing. I have pictured the lower wing of each sprue has this is the most obvious difference, there are others but not an expert in Fw190 marks yet.

and Fw190 A5 heavy wing

The kit has 6 options, 3 A5's and 3 A8's so you can build any two but if you order extra small part over trees you can build all four. So I have an extra small parts over tree set. A very reasonable £3.85 when I ordered them.

87d2c2e3-6609-464e-a3d2-e078d087d127.JPG

So I will be building options A, C and D

The kit also comes with 2 sets of etch one each for an A5 and A8 variant so the third aircraft will just have some etch seat belts.

ff5570ca-a451-4c76-85c0-65275446ee39.JPG

The decal sheet has enough for the 3 I'm doing plus some left so I might be able to get another A8 done if I can get another small part over trees set. And 2 sets of stencils.

f499b2d2-ad38-4b9e-b5e7-b4902edae80b.JPG

I haven't decided if I will build all 3 together or one after another but I need to get to my LMS for some more paint as I've gone through a fair bit recently and would like to have it all to hand before start construction.

My local model shop has reopened (partially) so I could pick up some new paint, they have recently started doing Mr Hobby acrylics so I could go with the exact colours on Eduards instructions rather than Tamiya equivilants.

I have also ordered another small parts tree set from Eduard so I can build the forth aircraft but will need more decals to finish. I will build option A and D so 1 A5 and 1 A8 together and then the other 2 later.

Still waiting on the small parts overtree to arrive so I made a start on the first aircraft which will be option D, this was a mistake on my part as I was planning on option A but miss read the labelling on the sprue but fortunately  spotted it before I drilled any option holes. Usual start of cockpit and then the lower wing/under carriage bays.

Just over 1 hours work today resulted in the wing section and fuselage are almost ready to be joined. This my second Eduards Fw190's so I knew which bits need care when assembling.

So the weekend was taken up building a new wall in the back garden but got some modelling done last night. I have said before I think these Eduard Fw190's are the best in 1/72 but has one area that needs careful adjustment when building otherwise the wing to fuselage joint is terrible. Where the inner wheel well housing meets the fuselage some material need to be removed from both to achieve a good fit otherwise the wing is not at the correct angle and you will have gaps. Below are photos showing the areas in need of work.

Inside the fuselage leading edge joint.

Compared to an unaltered one.

And on the top of the inner wheel well outside edges.

3e8b71fe-848e-4689-be49-e10c891fe81e.JPG

After that had been sorted its was a quick build up of fuselage to wings and then the tail planes, elevators, front engine cowl and front canopy. Some minor sanding of seams and it will be time for masking.

In preparation for the next aircraft the small parts overtrees have arrived along with some other extras.

Some more etch seat belts.

And finally  some Karaya Decals, "Captured Butcherbirds"

For aircraft no4 I was planning on the USN test G3 but now I think I may do option 1 or 3... maybe

Sprayed the blue band and spinner on option D tonight and made a start on the second aircraft which will be option A rather than C as I picked up sprue G rather than C.

Build progress has slowed due to a big garden project involving a mini digger and 2 skips so far but I managed to spray the Mr Colour H417 RLM76, much easier to work with than Tamiya acylics.

See that big lump of concrete at the front, well there 2 of them and I now have to hire a demo drill to break them up, weigh about 300kg each! not amused.

Back to bench tonight as the wife was happy with garden progress today! For anyone building this kit the following may be help full. When assembling the fuselage the instruction call for 3 sub assemblies E, D and engine along with part A80 to be sandwiched between the fuselage halves.

80f6c297-054c-4af3-ab5e-84a5c04333c0.JPG

Best way I have found is the attach A80 and cockpit, leaving out engine and assy D

17ed7bdb-031e-40ed-b75b-4cbb5fca6aae.JPG

Then join the 2 fuselage halves at the rear behind the cockpit only, this allows enough flex to fit assy d and engine later at a more relaxed pace.

On the first aircraft the RLM75 (Mr Colour H69) has been sprayed onto the wing upper surfaces, hopefully I can get the second grey on the wing tomorrow. I have left the fuselage for later as this will need softer masking and free hand mottling.

While waiting for my replacement skip to turn up this morning I masked and sprayed the wing with Mr Colour H68 RLM 74 and removed the masking from the fuselage. Leave it to dry for the day and hopefully start on the fuselage pattern tonight

Upper fuselage was masked and sprayed last night with RLM 74 and 75 and this morning I attempted the mottling but I don't think I had the 0.2mm needle in as I think the mottling is to large but this is a hazard working in 1/72.

Some more work on the A5 option A, now ready to be joined with the wing section. But I have some how managed to lose the IP cover so some thin plastic card will need to be fitted.

Quick comparison between A5 and A8, the most obvious difference is the nose guns. Smaller MG17 7.92mm in the A5 and MG131 13mm in the A8.

And finally got the exhaust panels sprayed.

I am impressed with the Mr Colour paints, much smoother finish than Tamiya acrylics, garden work permitting tomorrow I try for a clear coat ready for decals.

Changed the way I sprayed the gloss coat on the first Wurger and thinned the Future floor polish with Mr Colour levelling thinners instead of Tamiya X20A thinners and found the results to be much better. Now this maybe due to using Mr Colour paints (less the cockpit) instead of Tamiya acrylics but I only had to spray one coat of gloss instead of 2-3 I would normally do. Upside is started the decals last night and the Eduard decals performed as usual with just a small touch of Mircosol Blue.

Got some bench time last night as the garden project is nearing completion. The stencil decals have been applied to option D, thank fully not so many as modern aircraft. Ready for matt coat and start of weathering.

A bit more progress on option D. Canopy and undercarriage is ready to be fitted and the fuel tank has been fitted and weathered lightly. Also fitted the seat with some etch belts and the prop.
