Warner-Robins AFB Ga. Museum of Aviation

Recommended Posts

Back in 2017 some friends and I enjoyed an aviation themed tour of the Deep South of the USA. Among the states visited were Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, South Carolina and Georgia. The latter was especially fruitful for airfields, including the massive Lockheed-Martin plant at Marietta, several major USAF installations and various museums. In this photo report I will highlight the excellent and free to enter Museum of Aviation just outside Warner-Robins AFB near Macon, Ga.

The Museum of Aviation opened to the public on Friday, 9 November 1984 with 20 aircraft on display in an open field and another 20 were in various stages of restoration. The Museum  has grown to become the second largest museum in the United States Air Force and the fourth most visited museum in the U.S. Department of Defense. It is situated on 51 acres next to Robins Air Force Base in Warner Robins, Georgia. The facility includes four large exhibit buildings which house some of the 85 historic U.S. Air Force aircraft, missiles, cockpits, and award-winning exhibits, as well as several larger aircraft maintained in the open.

Here’s a few highlights from a memorable visit.

One of the delights of taking a road trip through the US, is you never quite know what military hardware you will see in the most unlikely of places, like this F-15A 75-0043 displayed outside Warner Robins Town Hall.

Thanks for looking. C&C always appreciated.

I went there in the 90's when they had the second Hercules modified for the Credible Sport rescue mission of the Tehran Embassy hostages sat outside. It was a fascinating aircraft to look at as it was both inventive (all those rockets and extended flaps) and crude (lots of steel angle used) at the same time. Warner Robins museum is one I'd like to got back to.

It's a great museum, been there about 5 times now since the 90's and into the 2000's on my travels to the USA and Ga. Will go back again one day. Nice photos there.
