Dave_R
Hi All, I'm going to have a go at building this Me 262:- Photographed after the German surrender in the hands of the RAF. The Hobbyboss kit has the right decals for this aircraft, but their painting guide bears little resemblance to the photos. So I'm going with the Airfix guide, which appears to be much better researched. Sprue shots plus PE seat belts. My first impressions from the sprues are very favorable and the molded metal nose weight is a nice touch. I'm looking forward to getting started. Parabat
Excellent! I still want to make 'Red 8' at some point. Having built the single seater, pay attention to the nacelle/wing fitting and the nose gun covers. Other than those tricky areas, this builds really well and the nose gear bay is really handy for ballast.

CliffB
This Group Build is certainly bringing out the challenging mottle schemes! Cheers
Greg Law
Hi Dave, I've built several of these Hobby Boss Me 262 planes. There is a problem with the nose area. The metal nose wheel housing need to have their lugs shortened a fraction. If you don't do this the gun bay cover won't close neatly. If you are going to have the covers open it might not be such a problem. Here is a link to my build where I had to restart my build to get past the problem after I worked out what was causing it. The relevant notes are on page 3.
Wez
Dave, Welcome to the GB with a subject I've always found fascinating, I remember making the Revell 1/32nd scale kit of this beastie back in the day and I've liked them ever since. Good luck with your build, I shall follow with interest.
Dave_R
Hi All, The cockpit's done. I've painted the wheel bays. so I'm about ready to start putting it all together. Dave.
Dave_R
Hi All, The big bits are together. ... and they did not want to go together. The tolerances are so tight that a little bit of extraneous plastic or a layer of paint can throw everything out of alignment. It was a case of test fit, sand repeat - many times. Anyway it's as good as I could get it (the nacelles aren't glued on yet). So a fair bit of filling to do next. Dave.
Dave_R
Hi All, It's ready for priming. It needed some filler in the expected places - but I think it's OK now. Dave.
Dave_R
Hi All, Primed. So, next is the tricky paint job, going against usual practice I think I'm going to start with the black, then the wings, then the fuselage and finally the mottling madness. Dave_R
Hi All, It's got some black and green on it now. Next a bit of masking and then Braunviolett. Dave.
Dave_R
Hi All, Another colour is on. A bit of masking and then on with the Lichtblau. Dave.
Dave_R
Hi All, The Lichtblau is on. So next comes the tricky bit. I've got this template thingy for mottling german style. I've used it before and the results have been OKish, but it feels like you need four hands to use properly. Dave.
Dave_R
Hi All, That's the mottling done. Not perfect, but spending more time on it would probably make it worse not better. Undercarriage next. Dave.
Dave_R
Hi All I've added the undercarriage, drop tanks, antenna etc. I've got to mottle the radar aerials and then on with the decals. Dave.
Greg Law
Looking good. The mottling came out ok. I can see that being hard over those curved surfaces.
Dave_R
Hi All, The decals are on. So, a few aerials etc. a bit of paint and some weathering etc and it's done. Dave.
franky boy
Looking good Dave. Nice work with the mottling mask. Think I might have to invest in one of those. James
Dave_R
Hi All, As usual I've left the finishing touches to the last minute but they're done now (I think). I'll get some gallery shots done tomorrow. Dave.
