Great painting and weathering as usual and the mud and snow look really good. Hi Craig. Hope you are well. You and Glynn are way too kind. Once again I am sorry for the length of time between update posts. Not like me in the old days with two or three updates a weekend! So, as I mentioned a while back, work on the wheels was next - I added some touches, in various places, of thinned Humbrol Gunmetal to create chipping effects, over which I added some very thinned Anthracite before using some Railmatch Light rust for rusty highlights: Closer view: Next I stippled on some very thinned Matt White in several thin layers to build up a worn whitewash appearance: Same as on the hull sides - I applied very thinned Humbrol Dark Earth, followed by Vallejo Mud and then Vallejo Snow: Following touching up of the wheels edges - the wheels were then attached to the hull sides using CA glue: With the wheels setting I started work on the tracks - applying some filler to the ejector pin marks on those sections that will be more visible: I followed my usual routine for tracks - thinned Anthracite applied all over with a medium flat brush. Once dry everything was dry-brushed with Gunmetal. Once dry everything was given an overall wash of very, very thinned Humbrol 93 and finally some touches of very thinned Railmatch Light Rust was applied here and there: Track parts cut off the sprues and assembled: Mud and snow lightly applied to the undersides of the sponsons using a cocktail stick: Same on the upper surface of the tracks - where it would have been difficult to get at with the upper hull unit in place: Test fit of the upper hull: Upper hull attached in place using the screws provided: More assembly followed and then painting was next - again - Humbrol 102 applied with a medium flat brush: Next I applied a very thinned wash of Revell's Gunship Grey all over. Once dry I used a fine pointed brush to apply a thinned wash of Revell's Anthracite in and around the detail. Finally, over all this, I dry-brushed a lighter version of Humbrol 102 - lightened with matt white with a touch of matt yellow. Washes applied: And dry-brushed: Next time it will be decals and starting the winter weathering. Comments and suggestions welcome. Kind regards, Stix
modelling minion
I think WOW!!! sums that up. What a transformation and excellent progress. Once again everything is perfect right down to the application of the mud and snow by cocktail stick, I don't know how you get it to be so realistic. I am especially grateful to your concise step by step explanation of your work and telling us exactly what paint and brush you used to work your magic, I still can't make half as good a job of things as you do but its nice to know how you do it. Isn't Revell's anthracite wonderful stuff, I use it for exactly the same things you do, also makes for a good faded black. 2

Looks really great! Need a start mine finally.... Hi all. I am sorry for the length of time it's taken me to reply! Thank you very much for all your kind comments. Again - as before - I have been doing bits and pieces on this when I have had chance. Decals applied - Wow! they're thick!! I cut my decals as close to the printed design as possible - to try to minimise the problems of silvering with the carrier film. Problem is - the cut edges are quite visible in some lighting! There will be lashings of weathering!! Baggie with all the other bits and pieces that still need to be added: Humbrol Gunmetal, Revell Anthracite and Railmatch Light Rust applied very thinned in and around the detail - I wanted some weathering in place to show through my weathered whitewash: Weathered whitewash in place - Humbrol Matt White - very thinned and built up slowly using a small stippling brush - leaving some areas thinner than others: More weathering effects next! Hopefully soon. Comments and suggestions welcome. Kind regards, Stix

modelling minion
That, my friend, is fantastic. I really like the fact that you took the time to do the green paint justice before applying the white over the top of it. The way the white is stippled on is very effective and really does hide the thickness of the Tamiya decals, it never ceases to amaze me that a company that makes some of the best models going makes what are probably the thickest decals around too. This is going to look brilliant when all the parts come together. Sad news about the Victory Show being cancelled, but at least they are planning on holding it next year.

You'll need a bottle each of Gunze Mr Setter and Mr Softer. Micro sol and others won't work as they're formulated differently. Do not use Gunze on Microscale or Cartograf decals as it will chew right through them. Dip the decal in hot water, it doesn't need to be boiling but it does need to be fairly hot. The temperature of a drinkable tea will do. The glue is heat activated and is what makes up most of the thickness. If you dip it in cold water you'll spend the rest of the day waiting and cursing. Lay down some Mr Setter, this is in the blue bottle. It acts as an additional glue. Slide the decal onto it and into postion and leave it alone. The decal should wrinkle a little. Give it 10 mins or so and go over the decal with a brush with a little Mr Softer (green bottle) on it. Use sparingly as it is extremely hot. Too much and it will damage the paint, especially the weaker acrylics. The decal will now wrinkle a lot. Do not touch it as it is almost liquified at this point. Once it is dry it will have smoothed out and will lay down beautifully over just about any raised or recessed detail you care to think of. Used properly it is probably the best conforming decal process in the industry. Used incorrectly and you'll be just another guy complaining about crap Japanese decals. Looking at the reference pics, the numbers in red seem to be applied over the white, or a patch left behind. the tracks look great, are you going to abrade parts of the white for wear? cheers T

Hope you and yours are keeping well. Thank you for your comments and yes, shame Tamiya doesn't make more effort with their decals. Thank you for the information about the Victory Show. I hadn't heard. Yes it's good they are going to try and hold it next year. Probably will be better than under the current circumstances. Thank you very much for your comments. I have been working on this over the past couple of weeks but not had chance to post any updates. First I got more weathering applied - various streaks of various thinned paints: Some of the smaller parts that need to be added have been painted and weathered in the same way: Then I added some thinned Humbrol Dark Earth and Desert Yellow using a stippling brush. Over this I applied some Vallejo European Thick Mud product using a cocktail stick: Then it all seemed to come together quite quickly. I got all the remaining parts attached and some final bits of weathering done: Next up I need to work on the base and possibly a figure or two. I have to admit I'm scaling back on the scenic aspect of this project otherwise I'm not going to get this and my other GB builds finished in time. I have already decided to use a smaller picture frame than I had planned. Comments and suggestions welcome. Kind regards, Stix

modelling minion
I absolutely love it. That has to be one of the best winter finishes that I have ever seen, the spattered up mud and snow really do look very realistic indeed. Even on a smaller base (I know how over committed you are as I'm in the same boat) this is going to be really impressive mate.

First I cut out and sanded some MDF to fit on top of the smaller picture frame I am going to use now: I also started work on a figure from Tamiya's Russian tank crew set - assembled and given a base coat of thinned Revell's Anthracite: Then I got him painted - using thinned Humbrol, Revell, Vallejo and Citadel paints: A few photos of him in place: I used some cheap mounting board card to build up some areas of the base: And finally I got some filler applied: More on the base next. modelling minion
Very nice Stix. The base is taking shape very nicely and the tank commander adds further interest to the build, although in the pics of him before he was fitted in place he does look like he's suffering from a terrible bout of diarrhoea and has raised his hand to ask permission to go and relieve himself, probably too much borscht. 7 hours ago, PlaStix said: You mentioned a none GB build Indeed.
