theplasticsurgeon
One that I only realised earlier today, and have consulted Dansk about. At age about 15, I built the Airfix MRCA kit - making an absolute pig's ear of the paint job. I hadn't mastered masking, trying to paint the white aircraft freehand. What a mess, mine finishing up black - well over a decade before The Saint Tornado. I have built an Airfix MRCA since then, for the 2017 Prototypes, Experimentals, Record -breakers, and Firsts GB. This is the origin for future Airfix 1/72 Tornado GR kits, rendering this kit eligable for me. Costing me £9 an IPMS Avon show in 2014. We might see a repeated paint botch, as I might not have all the correct shades. This kit has just one decal option - which suits me. That 617 Sqdn Dambuster 70th Anniversary. And here are the parts.
theplasticsurgeon
So now my previous builds of this kit. That original MRCA being long gone. First this Airfix GR1 built in 1988. Next another MRCA, painted properly in 2017. And that first GR1 was repainted as a Gulf War plane in 2019 - and sold at Jet Age.
modelling minion
Nice choice Tim. I really like your other builds, especially the MRCA prototype scheme, very smart.
Dansk
Really looking forward to your build Tim. Love your other builds, this new one will make a fine end result with the anniversary tail.
theplasticsurgeon
and showing you all my reference manual for this build. Working today on the cockpit, seats, pilots and a scratched HUD and wings. Now considering how to mask the wing gloves, prior to airbrushing the airframe.

theplasticsurgeon
Masked the inner-wing area, then pulled the fuselage together. and airbrushed the fin gloss black.

theplasticsurgeon
So, cleaned up all the seams in preparation for airbrushing - and realised I've not got Humbrol 156 paint for the undersides. And can't just buy it . . . . . . . so I used Revell Matt 57 instead Painting compromise No 1. Should I scrap it now? 3

helios16v
Totally fits w/ the theme. We frequently just used what was on hand for paints if it was close-ish. And I do seem to recall that ish blur being quite large back in the day. 1

theplasticsurgeon
So this morning I fitted the canopy. Had to lower the pilot for a better fit. Then masked the ready for airbrushing upper surfaces, with Humbrol 164 Dark Sea Grey.
modelling minion
Coming along very nicely Tim, I hope your masking doesn't take any of the decal with it when you remove it from the tail.

I was VERY careful with that masking, it was all VERY thought out. AND a wave at the base of the fin was left 'til later, in avoidance of risk. Very thin Tamiya for the lower edge, then an old railway timetable - to avoid any adhesive on the decals. And ultimately successful 😀 Demasked.

theplasticsurgeon
Decals - well some of them. Including that wave. I've just remembered, the dam on the tail must be the Mohne. I visited there in 1978. I was on ATC Camp at RAF Gutersloh at the time.
