"Ar-En-Zed-Eh-Eff" Corsair

From the looks of the reference pic, it seems like '48' had the 'half' tail wheel gear doors, with the aft section permanently closed and tailhook removed

2 hours ago, Corsairfoxfouruncle said:

I don't know Cookie they look like standard doors and the hook has been removed a common mod in the Solomon Island and Marine operations. Then again I'm not the Kiwi corsair expert, I guess its possible they did these mods  but Alan @LDSModeller might be able to confirm

The tail wheel doors do look normal to me in the reference pic above

If you check these Corsairs (all F4U-1A's), they had standard tail wheel doors

RNZAF Corsair Tail wheel doors

RNZAF Corsair Tail wheel doors 1

The only RNZAF Corsair, I know had the part tail wheel were the later F4U-1D's/

FG-1D's

RNZAF FG-1D Half tail wheel door

Having said that, depending on when the Photo of "48" was taken (it's only a moment

in time) later on it could have had a half door from repairs - honestly can't say for sure

a lot more bigger things have happened, I wouldn't lose any sleep over it:)

Regards

Alan

the weathering is just water based craft paint - dang I forgot to take a pic of the pots - but they're just the cheap ones we used as school kids. You can thin them with water and mix them to any colour you want. And if it all goes wrong, just wipe them off and start again. Of course this also means that they will always be susceptible to water. I've never tried to varnish over them, but I'm pretty sure you'd just end up with a mess.

Thanks Cookie, got it  I think I'll stick to tempera though, if you let it cure enough, it can take varnish without problems.

Lovely progress BTW, almost done now

Thank you Alan... I never knew they had these mods done. Sorry @Cookenbacher I guess you were right.

No, I think you are right Dennis. '48' was an F4U-1A.

I see it now, the shadow of the horizontal stabilizer tricked me into thinking the door ended half way, but the rear half is just in shadow.

I'll do my best to take your advice and not to lose any sleep over it Alan. 🙂

I'll do my best to get it finished up tonight everybody.

At which time I'll give it a very well deserved LIKE and say nothing about the doors. ;) :D It's looking really good Cookie, looking forward to the gallery shots. :)

Here it is with some of its Corsair buddies.

Sorry for the poor lighting, it's getting late and nothing but the overhead bulb in the room.

I'll tone down the aerial, so shiny, and hopefully take some Gallery worthy pics this weekend.

Hi Cookie,

I would love to see your model in a Black/White photo - Why?

Because, I think it would look just like a photo of the real thing.

That has to be the best weathered RNZAF Corsair I have seen thus far

Congrats on a master piece

Thanks for sharing your build with us

Regards

Congrats on the nice finish Cookie.  ... Nice looking -2 off to the left.

Thanks Dennis, and thanks for being such a great GB host, keeping us all encouraged and involved. The -2 was my first Corsair after coming back to the hobby - based on a pic in one of Dana Bell's books of a night fighter involved in the Truk raids in 1944, a fascinating subject that doesn't seem to have a lot of historical coverage.

I can't tell you how much these words mean to me coming from you Alan. I'm so glad that you've enjoyed my effort, as I've certainly enjoyed all of the advice and knowledge you've shared with us along the way.

Here's the requested B&W pic:

I tried to replicate the reference pic as close as possible (despite it being pilotless and the elevators drooped!)

That is one fantastic looking Corsair Cookie.

The painting and weathering really are great, very realistic.

Very well done.

Cheers Craig, and thanks for your encouragement during this build and in all of the other Corsair construction going on around here by others.

Great finish Cookie!  I love the weathering effects you have achieved. There is something really nice about those RNZAF markings. Great job 👍

Thank you Steve, I'm with you about the markings, an RNZAF Corsair has been on my build list for a long time.

That black and white picture shows just how good your build is as it looks exactly like the aircraft in the wartime pics.

This has been an excellent build from start to finish with everything done to an incredibly high standard which has set the bar very high for the rest of us.
