Thanks everybody!

May I ask though, what's supposed to be the benefit of having a clear, tintable primer?

It just lets you make primer any color you want, which comes in handy for this chipping job, allowing the primer coat to double as the metallic base chipping coat. I could see it being useful for difficult top coat colours like white or yellow or a pink Spitfire, hmmm.

I brushed some hairspray on the portions I wanted to chip - some folks spray it on with the aerosol can and others airbrush it, but I think simply brushing it on allows more control.

Lifecolor yellow zinc chromate sprayed on next.

Then chipped away with a paintbrush dipped in water.

Then a coat of Future brushed on to protect the YZC, and then applied some more hairspray after it was dry.

And time for the top coat. I grabbed multiple Non-Specular Sea blues, Intermediate blues, some light grey and some white. I started dark and worked lighter with more and more Intermediate blue and light grey and thinner as I went.

The fabric portions get a more chalky finish according to reference pics.

20200606_144639

Too much chipping.

20200606_152752

Walkways masked off.

20200606_153444

Still too much chipping.

20200606_153919

Mixed up some more paint and cleaned up my over-chipping with a brush.

20200606_160405

I also picked out some of the ammo boxes with different shades, as they were often mixed and matched.

20200606_160417

I still have to mask it up and paint the white on the underside.

Phew.

That is absolutely correct. I have seen Corsair Ammunition boxes

held by the RNZAF Museum, that were different colours too

One was actually "Salmon Primer" Colour, others Greenish Zinc Chromate,

while another collector with a Yellow Zinc Chromate box.

By the way, awesome work on your Corsair, and a big thank you for

the Hair Spray Brushing Tutorial, that will come in handy for my build

You guys are all leaving me in your dust with your builds :)

Have to get my stuff together, and get a move on

Regards

Alan

Impressive, Cookie, just impressive! :worthy: :clap2:

Just to make sure I got it right: the hair spray you brushed on came from a spray can? Did you decant it like a regular spray can paint? TIA

Well that settles it, one of the ammo boxes will have to be Salmon, thanks Alan! I think it can be made by adding a little Rust to YZC. I'm also working on KD431 as it stands at Yeovilton, and it seems to have a couple of ammo boxes in green - I'm guessing they are the US replacement colour for Light Slate grey (the airframe is Glossy Sea blue).

The hairspray I used came in a spray bottle, with one of those pump type spritzer things. I just unscrew the top and pour some into a plastic lid, and dip the paint brush in that.

Thanks for the kind words everybody!

I masked it up and painted the white. Inspired by @CedB's beautiful Catalina, I used Stynylrez white primer (thinned with Vallejo Insignia white and some home made thinner, because I just cannot leave well enough alone). Thanks for the tip Ced, it makes spraying white so much easier.

I've quite a few small areas that need clean up now, and then it will be time for decals.

Oh, almost forgot, used the metalizer brush method on the prop since the instructions call for a metal hub.

The prop looks excellent, what is the metalizer method you have used on it?

Here's a link to the instructions for using Model Master Metalizer with a brush - it works.

Unfortunately, I don't think it's easy to get a hold of in the UK, and I don't know how long it will continue to be available in the states either.

Here's a Spitfire XIX where I used the technique for the entire airframe.

No fair. Too good. This is like watching Navy Bird's builds where you realise you'll never get to that standard.

I've got a ways to go before I can be mentioned in the same sentence as Navy Bird!

You know me too well Ced! Water based acrylics don't require any hairspray to chip over metalizer.

All glossed up for transfers.

RNZAF roundels from the Xtradecals sheet.

20200610_171726

The rest from the EagleCals sheet.

20200610_181311

They're settling down nicely with Microset and Microsol.

20200610_181334

They'll definitely need a little weathering after a matt coat in order to match the top coat.

Hi Cookie,

Your Corsair is looking fabulous

With regards to weathering the Roundels, take a look at this Angry Duck Corsair in the

below photo link - Corsair is heavily weathered, but Roundels not so much

RNZAF Corsair NZ5255

The SU's (Servicing Units) who "Owned" the aircraft, liked to keep the Roundels,

in reasonably good nick, Pride in their work for one, Safety for Aircraft/crew the other
