Uncle F.
Hi folks. Which basic model in 1:350 is the best to build a 1943 Duke of York using PONTOS 35014F1 ? I´m a little bit confused because some people prefer KGV, others say POW is the better one. Thanks for your assistance. Uncle F.
Jamie @ Sovereign Hobbies
Hi Uncle F. To build Duke of York in 1943, you either need the Prince of Wales kit or you need to order extra sprues from the Prince of Wales kit (which costs around £35) to provide the parts missing from the King George V kit. You could, I suppose, scratchbuild the missing deck section from plasticard on the basis that the actual catapult itself is included in PE in the Pontos set and the Tamiya deck joins are absolute rubbish anyway and you pretty much need to hide them with the set's wooden deck. It could be done, but it's making more work for yourself in figuring out what Pontos wants you to do with the kit parts to use the detail set. That needs careful planning at the best of times. Adding in to the mix the need to adapt a kit to get to Pontos' presumed starting point is an extra dimension of hassle.

Hi Jamie, thanks for your prompt response, but which parts are especially missing from the POW kit compared to KGV? It can`t be the Walrus because this is available from other manufacterers, even in a better quality than Tamiya`s. Greetings from Germany Uncle F. Sprues E, F and G are different in each boxing. The detail changes are many, and the Pontos set will replace some of them anyway, but as the Pontos instructions show which parts to cut away from the kit and are not necessarily in an order logical to you, it does add an extra layer of complexity working out what the macro photographs in Pontos' instructions are showing you. It can take a bit of careful cross referencing when your kit parts are exactly as per the instructions. Starting with different parts isn't something I'd want to undertake lightly! e.g. from the Pontos Model HMS Prince of Wales instructions: 1
