RNZAF F4U-1D Corsair - Kohimarama IX

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

Place Holder for tomorrows Start :waiting:

I will be continuing a Build I stared a few years ago, using the old Revell kit.

Started a lot more than I had remembered, Still less than 25% though

From the following photos you can see I originally made a start on correcting then R 2800

Engine (got rid of those "Bumps") on the  Gearbox housing as in photo below

The Cowling was short shot in Places, so started repairs and removed Flaps

Cowling+repairs.jpg

Made a start on the exhausts too

Exhaust+area+opened+up.jpg

Had made a start on the Cockpit with some ribbing/stringers and Rear/forward Cockpit bulkheads

I had planned to make this an F4U-1A, but I'm a little apprehensive of getting the really faded finish

required for this aircraft, NZ5277, in the allotted time frame

NZ5277+Markings.jpg

So, I will build as an F4U-1D for 23 Ghost Squadron in overall Glossy Sea Blue

From the Ventura Site

F4U-1D NZ5485

I will use these decals, (just waiting on their arrival) again from Ventura site - which have the correct Roundel Colours

Ventura Decals

See you at the start tomorrow :D

Regards

Alan

You made a good start to this one and tiding up the short-shots well but, as you say, still well within the 25% limit Alan.

Must admit I was initially a little disappointed to read you aren't going for the faded example but your replacement scheme looks cool :)

Thanks , I too was disappointed, but given my glacial pace at building, this choice was ultimately the best.

I like the scheme too - we'll see how it turns out:)

This should be a great model Alan, you really have done your homework and the work done so far is very nice.

Definitely one to follow.

Thanks, I just hope I can deliver ^_^

Agreed this should be a good looking build when its done.

Thanks, now  I'm really feeling the heat, seeing how other builds in this GB have turned out thus far, big shoes to fill :D

Great choice, looking forward to seeing this one build up!

Thanks, given that there's not a Tamiya load of parts, fairly simple model - (though nothing is simple for me ^_^)

You've got off to a good start without coming anywhere near 25% IMHO. Lovely work on the engine so far. Nice choice of scheme too.

Thanks, the engine is going to nee to some more TLC, but I hope it all turns out well :)

Well its been close to what a week and a half (lost time), so need to gets something on the

board :waiting:

The kit parts in order as follows:

Engine/Cowling

Fuselage interior (thus far)

RNZAF+F4U-1D+Build+1f.jpg

RNZAF+F4U-1D+Build+1g.jpg

For some reason (probably lost in the annals of time) Revell modelled this kit with with

an F4U-4 Cockpit, so I have to scratch build one. I may look at using the side consoles

if they are suitable, hope to save some scratch building

Wings etc

RNZAF+F4U-1D+Build+1c.jpg

Fairly simple but room to improve

The centre section, I had cut out the moulded Exhaust area and plan to use the "Bumps" I cut off

the engine to act a the enclosed area for the exhaust stubs

Also need to fill in that "Step"

RNZAF+F4U-1D+Build+1d.jpg

What I have done previously for the exhausts

Screatch+Exhaust+pipes.jpg

Using sprue, that I have hollowed with a low speed electric drill, then cutting at about 45 degrees ( as in

above photo)

End result (just sitting there at present)

Rest of the kit parts

Kit Canopy/Windscreen

RNZAF+F4U-1D+Build+1a.jpg

Kit Prop

The up most blade has a sink mark in it, need to sort

Kit Instructions

My New Markings from Ventura

RNZAF+F4U-1D+Build+1m.jpg

RNZAF+F4U-1D+Build+1n.jpg

The significance of the Aircraft name, Ghost Emblem etc , I'll cover when ready to do the markings

Finally always important references :D

Both Bryan and Alex, were RNZAF pilots during WWII, flying in combat both the P 40 and

F4U Corsair

Well, now that I'm here better get building :D

Thanks for looking in, more soon

The Otaki/Arii kit did the same thing. I just remove all bits of floor and glue everything to the sides and rear so you can see straight through to the floor. Not much is visible in a corsair so it doesn't need to be perfect.
