Adam Poultney
Right well it's the 23rd and if I'm probably not going to sleep until who knows when (likely 5:00-5:30 or so, my sleep schedule is awful right now) so I might as well make a start. Can't prime anything right now so that'll be done later on when people are awake so my extractor fan and airbrush doesn't want anyone up.

Adam Poultney
2:47am Somehow I managed to add nose weight... Hope there's enough in there... Instructions say 5 grams. The carpet monster tried to steal this part. Not having that! Nose cone added and gear attached along with some other lumps and bumps. The underwing pylons are on but I'll leave the things going on them until after painting. The main gear doors may cause some trouble with the decals but I'd rather have the gear doors attached to the model to do them. Why on earth did the RAF think it was a good idea to have underwing serials over the gear doors..... Definitely enough space for them without going over them. Another reason why Vulcan B1s were the best aircraft, as if I need any more reasons... The underwing serials were nowhere near any moving parts.
Adam Poultney
3:30am (although I spent 20 minutes writing this) Right so I have the main construction finished. The main wheels are loosely attached so I'll remove them for painting. I'll build the things for the pylons next. This is one of the aircraft that I will be modelling, XF436, represented pretty much as she is seen here in 1961. She wore this scheme until at least late 1962 as that is the latest photo I can find of the aircraft painted like this. I believe the underside is aluminium and the upper surfaces are dark sea grey and dark green. The photo seems to be brighter than the true colours. XF436 crashed in Saudi Arabia on 29th November 1969, the same day and place as another Hunter, XF460 crashed in an unrelated incident. The pilots survived in both accidents, so this doesn't break my loose rule of not building aircraft that crashed with no survivors outside of combat. XF436 XF460 The other one be XF459 represented as she was in the summer of 1962. I believe the aircraft is painted similarly to how XF436 was painted in 1961; dark sea grey and dark green camouflage over an aluminium underside. I don't know what happened to this aircraft for certain, but seeing as there's no accident reports on a quick Google search or listing as a survivor I assume this one met it's end in a scrapyard after being retired... Oh I'd love this in my back garden!
Adam Poultney
4:14am Right time to get some food and sleep. It's starting to get light outside, probably a good indicator that sleep would be a good idea soon...

Adam Poultney
there will be more in a while, I need some sleep first. 24 hours is plenty of time to build one of these, maybe even two.
Adam Poultney
14:47 Right back to this! Local hobby shop was sound collection orders today so I have more primer now. A very windy walk there and back!
Adam Poultney
15:26 Now in black primer. I masked the canopy with PVA glue as this is quick to do. Edited May 23, 2020 by Adam Poultney
Adam Poultney
16:21 I've got the majority of the painting done. I have to be in work in an hour and probably won't get back until about 9 so I probably will have this finished after then. Painting the camouflage was done with the airbrush, freehanded. Gloss coat Bare aluminium underside.

Adam Poultney
22:15 Roundels and annoying underwing serials are good. I'm impressed with these decals for a small manufacturer, they're pretty good. I also added a wash to tone down the silver a bit.

Murdo
Very very nice! How did you do the underwing serials in the end? When it says 2 in 1 on the box, are there two kits in the box?

Thank you The underwing serials are printed twice, once in complete form and once cut up for you with the decal film not going over any edges. I'm very impressed with the design of that. Just a pain to line them up properly- I'm not sure I'd get a cohesive set of serials if my Hunter raised its gear. 40 minutes ago, Murdo said: Quote When it says 2 in 1 on the box, are there two kits in the box? Yep there are very much two kits in the box, a have the wedding still sealed which I will build either tomorrow or on Monday. That one will be XF436. I might buy another set of these and get aftermarket decals to do XF460 and another Hunter. Edited May 23, 2020 by Adam Poultney
Adam Poultney
23:58 Anyway, model is finished now. I left the outer pylons empty as per the pictures I've found of this aircraft.

Murdo
Thanks Adam. I built the Revell 1/32 Hunter many years ago and the underwing decals were a massive PITA so I was very interested in this as 1/144 as It's currently my absolute fave scale for planes (not airliners, got no real interest in them). I have a few 1/144 small plane builds on the go which it is high time I posted WIPs on them. Currently a Welsh Models (vacform) Scimitar and Revell (bog standard styrene) Lightning... And a Welsh Models (another vacform) Gannet arrived in the post last week. I've been very interested in the Mark 1 model kits, just wasn't sure they were worth the (to me, high) price. This looks a rather lovely wee kit though. Are these the decals that come with the kit ?
Hockeyboy76
Great build @Adam Poultney, that’s a cracking result. Now you have mastered 1/144, you should try 1/1 I road moved this from RAF Cottesmore to RAF Waddington via RAF Barkston Heath where, she was repainted as an 8sqn bird. She now sits out 8sqn HQ at Waddington.
