Richard502
Ketley & Rolfe, in "Luftwaffe Embleme 1939 -1945" write on p. 45 (German edition) that the shield color for II/KG 26 was red, and yellow for III/KG 26 (both with a black, sitting, lion). The color illustration on p.54 has it the other way around: yellow shield for II. Gruppe, and red for III. Gruppe. I am confused, possibly lost in translation. G.R.Morrison
From a thread on 'the other board,' The seven variations in the KG 26 emblem are illustrated in color on the back cover of Alexander Steenbeck's superb, profusely-illustrated unit history (Die Spur des Löwen, Lübeck, ©2012). It seems the I Gruppe had a black lion on a white shield; the II Gruppe a red lion; the 'new' Ju 88-equipped III Gruppe (this was formed from the KüFlGr. 506, which had previously used He 115s), a black lion on a yellow shield; the IV Gruppe, a blue shield, with orange lion and motto (Steenbeck also provides photos of these). Were there exceptions? Probably. At one point, several 1. Staffel crews added a suitcase on a string 'hanging' beneath the emblem, as they had been transferred so frequently, their only clothes were what they'd brought in their aircraft.
