A Gnice Gnew Gnat for the Collection

Hello all!

I'll be doing the superhero option starting tomorrow.  As usual, I'll be using my geographic location to get a head start, it's Satuday in just 4 hours here in Melbourne.  This time, I've got my hands on the Airfix 1:72 Gnat:

I'll be building the scheme on the box-top.  At some point I may have to build this thing again in the Hot Shots colours, but not this time, I've just restocked my red and white paints and its been a while since I built something colourful.

I'll also be joined by @emily who somehow has let me drag here into another one of these things.  Her kit came with 2 in the box....and they're similar colours to the gnat.....and small.....

This may turn into a double-blitzbuild!

A few hours in and its snack time!

So, up to now I've assembled most of the interior.  Here's the main cockpit parts:

Then I attached the inlets.  Luckily I read through some views so I knew to expect that these would put up a fight.  I got there in the end, but this is looking like a prime location for filling and sanding.

Paint for the cockpit started with black, then a mist of ocean grey over the top.  Other details were then hand-painted in a few Tamiya colours.

Finally, a dark wash.  After I finish this coffee, I'll add the instrument panel decals, then paint the main wheel-wells and close the thing up.  I *think* I can attach the main gear after the fuselage is closed, which will vastly improve the masking and painting experience, but the instructions say not to.  Test fitting will ensue.

I recently finished this kit (I'll put up an RFI soon), pilot included and in flight, on a stand (nose right up near the vertical), in Red Arrows scheme. Don't think I'm gonna build another 😂

Good luck!

Oh and for masking the cockpit PVA performed pretty well for me- saved a fair bit of time

4 hours ago, Graeme H said:

Wow, the set for the prestart is something in itself, what are the 2 little 4 engines resin birds?

Little paper clips.  They're also great for holding thin trailing edges and other small parts together while glue sets.

I got the paint on!

Woohoo!  Finished!

Off to bed for me!  Unlike last year, I'll try and remember to put it in the gallery tomorrow morning!  :)

Good morning Beggsy, WELL DONE

I make that 17hrs 5 minutes of jolly plastic fun.

The first plastic kit I remember was an Airfix Red Arrows Folland Gnat that my dad made for me about fifty years ago
