Tamiya Renault RE20 1/12

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

This was my first build in 30+ years.  I'd kept the kit all these years.  The decals were toast but the rest of the model, including the tires, were in surprisingly good shape.  I actually finished it late last Summer but I guess it's taken some time away before I plucked up the courage to post.  That and I wasn't a member on this site.

All I see are issues but I also see a completed build.  I was very pleased with the paint and decal on the upper cowling.  The line of yellow came through nicely between the black and white.  This was 98% out of the box as I was re-learning the craft.  I did a few small customization on the engine, cockpit, and brakes.  It was definitely like reconnecting with an old friend.  Years had passed but it was like we'd never been apart.

I've never been a big fan of yellow.  This combination has grown on me.  Needless to say there's a bit of mismatch in shade on the nose cap.  Oh well.  Here you go!

The only issues I see are the ones you pointed out had you not mentioned them I may well have not noticed. Concentrate on the positives and there are lots of those I think you've produced a cracking build one you should be proud of. I look forward to seeing more of your work.

Really nice build. and a nostalgic trip for me as I built one of those in the '80s

I don't know what happened to it though, I must have had a moment of madness in a house move and binned it 🙄

Looks so realistic.

Best compliment I could receive.  The wife says I need a good background.

So so so true.  Here's my current build:

I've lost all the builds from my younger days, totally sucks.  This kit was a "survivor".

Thanks all!

what did you use for the chrome

Kitkent - Thanks!  Rattle can Tamiya... Flat Aluminum, Silver Leaf, some Gloss Aluminum.  I did pin wash most parts with a home brew of flat black, chrome silver, heavily thinned.  I need to remove the cowling for a cockpit and engine/transmission/suspension pics.

Lovely build from a great motor racing era! All the metal parts look very realistic & I would never have noticed the shade difference on the nose one if you hadn’t pointed it out

Not completely out of the realms of possibility that a replacement nose may look slightly different... I remember some 1975 March F3 noses that had a pronounced step. The March team put in a lot of effort to make sure that all noses fitted all cars (Nillson and Ribiero drove very very close to each other, resulting in several breakages).

So a shade difference in an F1 team of the period is not a biggie. Martini Brabham-Alfa for instance said that the red was a specific mix, but used an Alfa colour rattle can spray for invisible touch ups...

Go figure.

Just acquired one of these.  First built one back in the 80's the days before I had the use of airbrushes or rattle cans, decent masking tape and before superglue!   Made a half reasonable job of it for the time - but still hugely frightened by the demarcation line between the white and yellow around the cockpit....!!
