'Thrills & Spillers' 1950s Air Racing Dio - Percival Proctor/Miles Messenger

Recommended Posts

Hi all

After completing the Pavla Messenger and Dora Proctor (put up as separate RFI's) I thought I'd like to display them in their element. Both machines were owned by the Spiller family from Keyston, Northants, and extensively air raced in the 50s. AHFK won the Kings Cup Air race in 1959 averaging 143mph (its max speed was 160mph so thats not bad over a 72 mile course)

Both had their challenges! Anyway, the Dunlop pylon was inspired by a famous photo of Lettice Curtis racing her Proctor - and is supposed to represent the fabric banner box of the full size. An Oxford Morris J Type Ice Cream Van and some Airfix railway figures finish it off - the schoolboy has raced to the fence for a closer look!

Supposed to be a bit of fun! Will be displayed at the Sywell Aviation Museum (both machines were based at Sywell) when we re-open after lockdown

Hope you enjoy it!
