1/48 Tamiya Corsair - Hard worked example

Recommended Posts

Good Afternoon.

started this about 8 years ago when I brought the Aires detailing set (engine and bay, cockpit, gun bays and wheel bays) .  I wanted to do a well worn Pacific Carrier example.  I quite quickly put it on the shelf of doom when I realised the project was beyond my skills at the time.  Every now and then through the years I took it down, looked at it and though, nah, still not ready.  Last november I took it down and did a couple of bits (tidying up the tail and priming the model).  It then sat on the shelf in the shed until last weekend where I picked it up and it quickly fell together.  At some point I picked up a montex mask set for it, but have no idea where from or when!

Build log can be found here

Hope you enjoy the finished project.  I am really pleased with how it came out and I am glad I didnt trying to finish it 8 years ago as I dont think I could have achieved the same result.  I think I need to find some mechanic figures to finish it off.

Well, it was well worth the wait Richard. 😀  That is a great looking, well-worn Corsair!   I like the weathering a lot and it looks like you've got the right touch for that.  I'm not a Pacific War expert but I'd say you've nailed the look of hard workin' warbird.  If it were an island based bird, I'd suggest weathering the back side of the prop blades.  I've read numerous references to those props being blasted by the coral runways and sort of counter-intuitively, it was the rear of the blades that took the brunt of the coral blasting away at the paint.   Give yourself a big pat on the back Richard; for bringing this model back and for finishing it with such aplomb!  :clap2:

Pooh, that's heavy weathering! More like an island than a carrier bird. Your detailing is outstanding and the colours look perfect to me. You must have invested quite some time in the research - I like that.

That's a very realistic "well worn" look you've achieved. Neither over done or under done. As is typical for me, I looked to see the cockpit detail and it's very impressive. Display that bird proudly! You've earned the right!

Very good, from the state of it they're stripping away any useful parts and about to shove the rest over the side of carrier. 😊

I agree with Gary about the propeller wear. The front face of the blades wears a lot less than the rear. So you could have gone to town on the back.

Thanks guys. This project was inspired by a magazine article about 9 years ago which I thought looked awesome. The aires set is beautifully detailed, but as usual, not the easiest to fit (lots of cutting to both the model and resin.iam glad I came back to it as I think it is my best finished kit yet (well tied with my crashed landed b17 dio which I completed earlier this year) I guess the moral of the story is don't give up. Something which seems too difficult now will come together in a couple of years time

Might have to have another go at the back of the prop

Superb! I normally break most of any aires set just detaching it from its casting blocks, so big respect for the invasive surgery you had to do on the kit.
